between love and hate

-

Mia and Alex were like ketchup and mustard. Sure, they went together on a hot dog, but on their own? Yeah, not exactly a love story. They'd been best friends since kindergarten, the kind who could finish each other's insults and trip each other up mid-sentence.

They bickered over everything. Favorite pizza toppings (Mia was pineapple, a cardinal sin to Alex), who got shotgun (always a war), and even the best way to fold laundry (Mia, the neat freak, versus Alex, the "throw it in a drawer" champion).

But here's the thing: beneath the constant sniping, there was a weird, undeniable connection. Mia secretly loved how Alex could make her laugh until her stomach hurt, even when he was being a jerk. Alex, in turn, appreciated that Mia always called him out on his BS, even if it meant a public roast session.

One rainy Saturday, stuck at Mia's house with a power outage, the usual bickering took a turn. Bored out of their minds, they ended up playing an old board game, the kind with cheesy truth-or-dare questions. Mia, ever the daring one, picked dare.

"Alright, dare you to..." Alex paused dramatically, then blurted, "tell me the one thing you secretly like about me."

Mia's jaw dropped. The silence crackled in the dim light. Finally, she mumbled, "Fine. I, uh, I guess it's kinda cool how you always know how to make me laugh, even when I want to strangle you."

A blush crept up Alex's neck. "Uh, thanks? I, uh, appreciate that you always keep me real, even when I'm being an idiot."

The air hung thick, a weird mix of awkwardness and something else, something neither of them could quite name. It wasn't hate, that was for sure. Maybe... maybe it was a ketchup and mustard situation, where things were more interesting together, even if a little messy.

Later that night, as the power flickered back on, they looked at each other, a silent understanding passing between them. Maybe, just maybe, their love-hate relationship was about to get a whole lot more interesting.
