Maurice and Gayle attempted an outing, their first real outing with each other on Monday afternoon. Gayle eyed Maurice for months but wouldn’t approach him. Although she wasn’t afraid to approach him, she’d remembered her grandfather’s words, “Let the man approach you. When it’s meant to be, God will bring him to you. Read your bible, baby girl.”

Gayle, an avid churchgoer, reminisced and reflected upon those words quite often. After the last failed relationship, Gayle decided that the next man would have to be divinely intervened by God for them to attract each other. Maurice called Gayle earlier that afternoon with the proposed invite to dinner.

Text Message from Maurice:

Hello!! How are you today? Would you like to join us for dinner at Applebee’s today at 4:00? I also invited Mattie to meet us as well. Hope you can make it ☔🌧👍🏾.

Text Reply to Maurice:

Hi there, I am well today. I do hope you are well too. I’d love to join you for dinner today. Thank you for the invite and I’ll see you all at 4.

I might be a few minutes after 4, but I’ll be there. 😉

As they waited for their table, Gayle and Maurice randomly conversed with each other but was oft entertained by Daniel. Once seated, Daniel’s entertainment continued, and Gayle’s gaze never left Maurice; attracted by his words as they drifted from his lips. Strange enough as they sat there and relished in each other’s company, Maurice and Gayle didn’t say much to each other. Mattie and Maurice talked amongst themselves, and Daniel talked to all of them, mostly Gayle. Uber-excited by her presence at the table, Daniel continued with jokes and laughter and his activities from the day. A great dinner amongst friends.

Perplexed, Mattie called Gayle later that evening. “Say lil girl, what the hell was that? How do two people sit at dinner and don’t talk to each other? You say he’s your future husband, but how do you expect to get him if you don’t talk to him? I purposely came late to give you two time to explore each other. And then, when I get here, I walked away from y’all thinking y’all would talk to each other. I look up, and here you are following me. I looked up again, both of you were following me. What the hell are you following me for? You two gon have to do a whole lot better than that if y’all gon get together. I’m not coming to the next dinner, if there’s to be another one. Baby girl, communication is KEY. If y’all can’t communicate, you won’t make it. Well, I’m listening?” Gayle blushed and replied, “Mattie, I didn’t know what to say to him. I told you I’m no good at dating. I’ve never done it before.” Mattie replied, “Oh hell no; you can’t make me believe you’ve reached thirty-six years old and don’t know what to say to a man or how to date him? I just will not believe that!”

The two friends went on for a half-hour of Gayle’s dateless life. Mattie closed with this, “Baby girl if you’re fortunate enough to get another chance at this, you’re on your own. You better come outta that shell and figure out what to say to him or you gon lose your man. Love ya, baby girl. Night.”

Gayle’s heart dropped after that call as she feared she’d lost any chance at getting Maurice. Before the heart sank any further, she texted him.

Text Message to Maurice:

Apologies for the late message and for just getting back to you. Thank you for dinner. I enjoyed both of you. We should do it again soon.😉

Text Reply from Maurice:

You're quite welcome indeed. Have a good night. 🙏🏾

Epic failure she thought, but as grandfather said quite often, "If it's meant to be, God will bring him to you. Give Him time." Days passed; calls and texts between them continued. His next message later that week was with a collaboration proposal to prepare a trip within a month's time for the youth of the church. Gayle gracefully accepted the charge and begin her new project for Maurice.

The following week, Maurice called with an invite to lunch at Ethel's Wings and Things. Although apprehensive, Gayle accepted this lunch meeting with Maurice. While at Ethel's Wings and Things, they discussed their business first and actually talked to each other more than the week before. Gayle said, "I have a small surprise for you, as I overheard you like this particular dessert."

Ethel approached the table with a slice of her famous chocolate cake. Maurice took one bite which melted in his mouth. He then fed Gayle a bite, and they laughed. Renewed happened over chocolate cake.
