"Sharon," Greg looked around nervously. Everyone at the party was having a great time and he was about to break this girl's heart.

"I have to talk to you, now" He gently grabbed her arm and pulled her outside away from the booming music and party goers inside the house.

"Hey, hey, wait a minute", she said, a little annoyed, "what's wrong with you Greg. What's the rush to talk to me now? We're having such a good time?" She stepped closer to him and softly kissed his cheek.

Greg turned his face not wanting to make things harder for either of them.

"Look Sharon," He couldn't look her in the eye. Instead, he starred at the sandy path which led down to the beach, "I don't know how to tell you this other than straight forward and get it over with."

Sharon felt her heart stop for just a moment. Did she hear him correctly? She couldn't remember what came out of her mouth next.

"What do you want to get over with Greg?"

Greg impatiently ran his hand through his curly brown hair. "Sharon, I think it's time we take a break. I need some time. Away from you."

Sharon began shouting. "Time? After 6 years you want time. Greg?" she reached towards him, but he backed away with both hands raised in the air as if to say, I'm done. He quickly jumped into his yellow Volkswagen beetle which was parked just a few feet away and drove off. He left her standing there shocked, hurt and at that moment, in a matter of seconds, Sharon's world crumbled around her.

Sharon couldn’t do anything except watch him drive away. This was so unlike Greg. Why would he do this, and after 6 years together? She started crying again.

Sharon and Greg met six years ago at another party such as this one when they first started college. He was raised by a strict military father and she from a protected sheltered environment. Once college started it felt as if the reins had finally been cut and they were free! Neither one knew what he or she wanted in life, but they fell madly in love and their relationship thrived for many years. Until now.

Sharon didn’t want to go back into the noisy house. She wanted to be alone. She walked down the same sandy path Greg had starred so hard at so as not to look her in the eye until she found herself alone in the darkness.

The full moon was glowing bright. White capped waves crashed upon the shoreline as she walked. She noticed the coolness of the sand on her bare feet and pulled her shawl snuggly around her slender shoulders. Her eyes fixated on the ground before her placing one foot in front of the other as she thought of Greg. What had she done? And what would she do now?

Suddenly, her attention moved towards the ocean. Had she seen something move from within the darkness? The moonlight cast a bright glow on the water’s surface, yet she squinted her eyes, hoping to see clearly.

There it was again! Something moved from beyond the waves, and it was big! Was she imagining it? Sharon ran towards the surf. The cold, foamy water swarmed around her bare ankles. Her eyes grew wide, and her heart raced as she walked out into the surf, farther and farther until the waves rose to her knees.

From beneath the water a giant object rose to the surface. It was oval, the size of two school buses and a bright green light enveloped it. As the object came out of the water the green light expanded through the surf to where she was standing and illuminated the beach.

In this instant, Sharon felt time had stopped. Her sadness, her pain, memories of her breakup with Greg, all of it disappeared momentarily. She couldn’t hear the waves swirling around her legs or could she feel the coldness of the water. The object hovered just above the water’s surface as if it were studying her. She watched remnants of ocean water dripping of its edges.

The green light began to move across the water and up to where she was standing on the beach. As if someone had driven a lance through her heart, a sudden wave of love flooded every cell of her body. Sharon knew after this night she would never be the same again. Her life didn’t end that night. It was just beginning. She felt as if her heart would explode with love for life itself. There was so much to live for! The oval object slowly rose into the sky, the green light receding with it and in a lightning flash, it was gone.

Once again, she was alone standing on the beach. The full moon came back into view. The waves lapped at her feet. She smiled to herself, with a distant thought of Greg. That night she wasn’t alone, and she never would be again.
