3 Rabbits smuggled

Lila's mind

*WARNING*: I've put a content warning on this story as this piece includes strong topics and themes.

~

Lila discreetly smuggled her three rabbits in her suitcase as she fled the country with her mother. Heroin, fascist, and Sexdoll are the names of each rabbit she calls her best friends.

"Look at our child! Our screwed-up daughter who thinks her 3 stupid rabbits are the only friends she can befriend! She certainly has other problems."- The father pours himself some whiskey.

"Go on, Heroin! Save the day, go downstairs and hear what they say!"- Lila nudges her rabbit.

~

Lila moved to a different town with her mother and father when she was 6. Her dad needed a better job opportunity to not only sustain his family but have enough until the arranged divorce day came so there were still sufficient funds for child support he would be paying.

Lila's mother was a substance addict who constantly lied about her unhinged and complicated family dynamics when publicly speaking about it.

*KNOCK KNOCK*

Mother opens the door. "Hello?"

"Hi! I'm Lila's school teacher! I just wanted to address my concerns as I understand that Lila just recently moved to this town, and it's a new school and school environment, but I'm hesitant that she's engaged in making friends. And it's beginning to worry me."

"Oh, Lila will be just fine! The more you barge and push these situations with her difficulties, the less progression she will make! Thank you for this information, I'll talk to her tonight." - She attempts to close the door.

"Just one more thing... She didn't want to leave school today. She wouldn't let go of me when the school bell rang. Just another concern."

Lila's mother begins to show a defensive expression.

~

"Sexdoll, this is all on you! Go to the front door and tell me what they say!!"- She pushes the rabbit towards the front door."

"I'm worried, she's- " The teacher looks down. "Oh! A rabbit."

The mother gasps in aggression.

"Oh no, no no!!"- Lila runs out of her room to the front door.

"Oh hello, Lila!"- Her teacher smiles.

"Hi, Ms. Spans!"

"Oh, Lila! What are you doing here? You know it's past your bedtime. Now head upstairs and pick a book and a blanket and I'll be right up there to kiss you goodnight and say some prayers!"- Her mother falsely smiles.

Lila's mind: "But... she's never kissed me goodnight or sung me prayers before?"

Sexdoll was never seen again after this.

~

Lila's father came to the new house/town only once. He visited his family once and never again. Despite this whole moving town to benefit the father's financial opportunities, his father also seemed to have other plans.

"Hey, Lila."- He opens the door.

"Daddy?!"

"No hugs or kisses right now!"- He pushes her hands waving up to him.

"So now you come? Just now? The now that was meant to be then?"- The mother walks out of the kitchen

"Oh please, I had things to do." - He'd roll his eyes.

"Fucking SON OF A BITCH OF A CHEATER."- She throws an unknown object at the wall and walks back to the kitchen to finalize her chicken soup.

The father looks back down at Lila. "Well, hey! I have a special present Daddy got you from working so hard."

"A present!?"

He pulls out a bag from his pocket. "Here. Just for you, my sweet daughter?"

"What is this? A prize!!?"

He'd chuckle. "Even better, they are what I call... special fantasy unicorn land. You swallow one of these and you teleport to unicorn land!"

"Unicorn land!? How father?"

"Well, once you swallow one of these pills, you start visualizing and experiencing incredible visions only you'll be able to see."

"I still don't get it, Father."- Lila fidgets the bag.

"Just here, swallow one and you'll see."- He pulls out a water bottle from his bag.

"If you take one daily, you'll be in unicorn land forever. Now, Daddy has to go back to business, I'll see you soon."- He smiles and heads out the door.

"I'll see you in unicorn land Daddy!"- Lila swallows the remaining salvia in her throat.

2 years later:

"Lila eat something." - Her mother inhales her joint.

"I'm not hungry."

"You should eat, Lila. You're a growing girl."- Her mother's Sir Lankan boyfriend (at the time) entered information.

"I said, I'm, NOT , HUNGRY!"

Her mother and boyfriend glanced at Lila.

"Lila, why are your eyes so big?"

"And black.."- He inputted.

"Nothing."- Lila walks away.

"What the fuck have you been taking."- She gets up and grabs Lila's face.

~

Lila was twelve when she realised her family was extremely dysfunctional. At that age, she opened a realisation of how awful her mother was as a person, and how her dad was never fully there for her in her life and made her take drugs to forget he existed. That moment she decided to conduct change, she wanted to flee yet again.

"Heroin, fascist. It's just you two and I left in this world. We need to run away! Let's start packing."

Time went by as she packed her clothes and debris from her mother's hand-me-down utilities and accessories, she slowly tippy-toes downstairs. It was almost too quiet in the house, for once it was silent, the quiet is abnormal.

"Mum..? Are you here? I'm going to Gracie's house for a bit, from next door."- Her head floats around to capture her mother.

"Oh! Fascist! We gotta go-"- She pauses when finding her two rabbits in the kitchen.

...

"Mum...?"- Lila freezes.

Lila watches Heroin and Fascist eat the legs of her mother. Their jaws worked tirelessly on the open wounds of her legs and arms, targeting the veiny area. Lila winced as she heard the ominous crunch of each bite... Was there really a bite though?

"H-heroin... F-fascist..."- Lila backs away. "What are you doing...?"- She nervously questions her rabbits.

The rabbits pause to glance at Lila.

Lila's piercing scream startles her rabbits, sending them scurrying away as if fleeing from the life she had been trying to escape.

She closes her eyes and holds her head. "It's not real, it's not real...nothing is real."~

~~~~~~
Rabbits can symbolise a shift of positivity and purity. Additionally symbolises innocence. When Lila finds her mother dead on the floor, it is actually a drug overdose from the REAL heroin. Lila watching her mother being "killed" by the rabbits depicts Lila's innocence and paranoia delusions (from drugs, past & present trauma). As each rabbit dies out/disappears... her innocence slowly disappears too.
    I did not expect this, I love the surprisingly expression on my face when I read your stories. Your symbols are amazing!
  • This was a wild ride. I finished it and immediately read through it again. Such a creative piece of prose with layers upon layers to dig through. You really handled terror and loss of innocence well. I loved it!
    God, this was such a clever and interesting as well as very sad depiction of a loss of innocence. Stunning work, Kodah.
    Poor Lila - so many bad parents and the little kids pay for the parentsโ€™ irresponsibility and neglect. Thanks for the explanation at the end. I knew it couldnโ€™t be real because rabbits are vegetarians. Great build up to the end, showing the icky personalities. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘
