In the early ’90s, mango growers in Devgad brought grafts from Ratnagiri for experimentation as the hard laterite soil of the region had made plans of the grafts difficult. However, the growers uprooted existing trees that had grown in the rock and planted the Alphonso grafts in their place.

These grafts survived and Devgad Alphonso was born. As part of their marketing efforts, Devgad mango growers started sending the Alphonso to Mumbai.
