There is no doubt that a good mango can make our taste buds sing, but a bad mango can do quite the opposite. There is nothing worse than ordering or buying mangoes only for you to find out they are hard & super sour. To help you avoid this unflattering experience, we’ve created this tasteful guide on things you need to be on the watch for when choosing the most amazing mangoes.

Remember- “It’s okay to take chances, but not when it comes to mangoes”.

Follow our tips and you’re sure to choose a good mango everytime, it could just be like your own little super skillset & secret talent!

Don’t Judge a Mango by Its Color (Except when Largely or Completely Green)

You might think that choosing a mango that is bright orange is the way to go and ensures you’ve selected the best one, but when it comes to determining ripeness, color is far from an indicator. Ripe mangoes can have all sorts of different shades, from yellow, orange to even dark red, this depends on the varieties or type of mango you’ve selected.

The only color you need to be cautious of is green because if the mango still has huge splotches of green on the outside, or worse is completely green, it’s best to leave it behind. (Unless you’re a kaccha mango person ;)

Squeeze Gently to Determine Ripeness

A good practice to undertake and determine ripeness of a mango is to give it a gentle squeeze. With a good mango, you’ll be able to slightly squeeze it. If the mango is still hard and is not able to be squeezed, it’s not ripe yet whereas if it is extremely soft and squishy that’s definitely not a good sign, it means it’s about to rot.

Aroma at the Stems

Do you notice an aroma when you smell the mangoes? If not, that indicates, it’s not ready to eat just yet. Mangoes that are ripe always have a sweet, fruity and rich aroma at the stems. Also, note that if your mango has a sour or alcohol smell, it’s overripe, which means fermentation has started and it’s gone bad.

Similarity to Peaches & Avocados

A ripe mango has a lot of similarity to peaches and avocados in terms of texture. Remember, if you want to eat a mango right away, make sure it’s fairly soft but if you plan on consuming it after a few days, it is always best to choose one that is firmer (hard).

Examine the Shape of the Mango Stem

This tip is one that not many people are aware of, but the stem of a mango can say alot about whether it’s ripe or not. Shocking right?!

When it comes to a ripe mango, the stem can be viewed as inside of the mango, like it is a part of the inside of the fruit. On the other hand, if the stem is still seen protruding (outward direction), it means that the mango is edible although has not perfectly ripened.

Conclusion:

Now that you know how to distinguish between the perfect ripe mango and the not yet ready one, following through these tips by us will help you be a mango choosing pro in no time. Mangoes are the tastiest and sweetest fruit and now you’ll never ever have to hesitate or worry about choosing the perfect one ever again!
