Fighting for black lives while eating your feelings.

The past week has been one of the most heart heavy, stressful weeks in my 23 years of living. As a black woman, today's news stories have continued to affect me mentally in negative ways as more and more information is brought to light on the current police state we seem to be living in.

Decidedly one of the things that has helped me come out of this current mental funk is baking! Trying a couple of new recipes every week has kept my family, and I busy in the kitchen, keeping our minds off of the negative impacts of our current society.

Each recipe in this article has been tested and approved by my family and I, and includes an organization that you can donate to help support #blacklivesmatter. Please remember that although it's helpful mentally to take time away from social media, it's also essential to stay updated and educated, and donate what you can to those in need.

After months of being in self-isolation and baking the same chocolate chip cookies over and over again, I decided to do something slightly different...add oatmeal! And BOY DID IT CHANGE EVERYTHING!! These cookies not only have a fantastic taste and feel but are EXTREMELY soft and melt in your mouth almost instantly. This is the only cookie recipe that my family has DEMANDED I remake within the four days it took to finish them off. Never underestimate Ms. Crocker and her ability to SERVE!!!

These banana muffins are the perfect excuse when your family is tired of you making banana bread. While being super moist and fluffy, they bake super fast and are a super easy snack to whip up in between binge-watching your favorite trash tv show. I added dark chocolate chips to the top of my muffins, although it's not included in the recipe to do so. The recipe makes only 12 regular sized muffins, so I highly suggest doubling the recipe to feed a hungry family of more than two people.

This recipe is PERFECT for those social distancing hangouts that have become so popular all over the United States. Whether you're hanging out with friends or family six feet apart, these big fat cookies are my favorite thing to share with others! Cookies this size usually aren't as chewy as I'd want them to be, but these BAD BOYS exceeded all my expectations! This recipe makes about 18, but if you're in a household like mine where every family member has a mouth full of sweet teeth, I'd recommend doubling the recipe. ( I don't know what All Recipes has against large serving sizes.)

This last recipe is one of my parent's favorite things to make when we are out of bananas and the will to devour another banana bread in an untimely manner. This lemon cake is perfect for breakfast and goes super well with coffee and eggs! It's incredibly easy to bake, and you can make a choice to put the icing on top depending on how healthy you're planning on being that week, and the recipe even comes with a video for those of you who hate reading.

Although baking can be fun, and it's important to take breaks from social media, please remember that now more than ever is a critical time to stay educated and aware of current events. Black people are fighting every day for a right be to heard and respected in the country we built. Donating to charities, sharing viable information, and checking in on your brown and black friends and family are just a couple ways you can contribute to the fight of justice for black lives.
