Little Book of Black

Wynter Day Is her name. After all, she was born on a winter day and her mother could not resist the irony by naming her Wynter Day as she has a wonderful sense of humor. Although they were from the Caribbean, Wynter's mother, Alesha, was born in Jamaica and expected to give birth in warm, sunny Jamaica as well. However, fate had a different plan and Alesha gave birth in the middle of winter in Brooklyn at Aunt Flo's house.

It is a hot August summer and Wynter is aged at 22 years. She has landed at Kennedy International Airport at 2 p.m. Eastern time on her way to Brooklyn to see Aunt Flo.

Wynter spent her formative years in Jamaica with her mother, Alesha, learning, growing, getting plenty of love from mommy, daddy, J.P., and beautiful sunshine.

Truth be told, Wynter was always Aunt Flo's favorite, especially since she was born in the house at 1452 Nostrand Avenue. Aunt Flo's house was the place everyone from the family who came from Jamaica, would first settle at the Nostrand Avenue house find a job, make some money, and find their way. If they decided to stay in Brooklyn, they'd stay with Aunt Flo while they got on their feet. If they decided to go back to Jamaica, they saved the money for their plane ticket back home. Aunt Flo's 1452 Nostrand Avenue provided the ebb and flow we all need to navigate through life. Aunt Flo's house was special. Aunt Flo won 1452 Nostrand Avenue in a poker game. There was only one request from the person she won the house from.

Ahh. Aunt Flo. Aunt Flo is a little long in the tooth these days for sure. In her hey day, she was a Hot Mess.

Aunt Flo was beautiful, smart and a risk taker. When she arrived from Jamaica to stake her claim, she had her SuSu winnings and a head for business. Her winnings were enough to get her into the hottest poker game in town with some leftover. Aunt Flo knew how to play and didn't skip a beat winning her first hand. She didn't stop until she won 1452 Nostrand Avenue. There was one request from the Owner of the house: Keep the little Black Book in the drawer at all times. Do Not Remove it. Do Not Open It. Under the book there was a letter addressed to Aunt Flo.

The letter read:

Hi Flo,

I knew you would win. Congrats! Don't open the book. Save it for W.D.

Love, J.P.

P.S. Give the book to Wynter when she comes to visit in June.

Aunt Flo was surprised that the letter was addressed to her. She read the letter and was surprised when she looked at the signature. She couldn't figure out who J.P. was. She only knew one J.P.

Just as Aunt Flo was finishing reading the letter, Wynter knocked on the door very excited and calling out Aunt Flo's name. Aunt Flo put the letter back in the drawer quickly and they had an Energetic, Fun-loving hug and kiss. They hadn't seen one another in quite some time. Wynter had been working in Jamaica and kept pr0mising to come to see Aunty Flo, however, life kept getting in the way like it always does.

As Luck would have it, Wynter had been working hard on her job as an Ad Manager. Her team did such a great job on the campaign that the client gave her boss a bonus that he generously shared with the team. Wynter got a bonus check for $3,000. She immediately knew she was going to fly to Brooklyn to keep her promise to Aunt Flo for a visit. She got the cheapest flight she could find so she could hold on to a few dollars to put away for a rainy day.

After Aunt Flo and Wynter got all of the hugs and kisses out of the way, they sat down to eat all of Wynter's favorite meals that only Aunt Flo can bring to the palate. Mom can cook them too, but it's something about the way Aunt Flo does it that has always been special to Wynter. Wynter never wanted her mom to know that because she didn't want to ever hurt her feelings.

Although Wynter was young at 22, she was always ambition and maybe a little old for her age. Many refer to it as wisdom. As Wynter was wise for her years, she realized she did not want to struggle financially as her parents did. She knew she wanted to have a family one day when she met the right man and wanted to be financially solid so she would be able to give her children options in life.

Wynter had been saving her money, 10-20 percent from every paycheck to "pay herself first" as she learned from reading financial literacy material from different experts. She wanted to get it right. She also wanted to make a big down payment on her new home. Being able to pay cash for her new home would be a dream come true. Where would that kind of money come from? Wynter knew she had no rich uncles so it was a nice thought. Wynter knew she had to keep saving from every paycheck.

After Aunt Flo and Wynter finished their delicious meal, they put their hands on their stomachs suggesting they were stuffed. They did that at the same time, looked at each other and let out a good belly laugh.

Aunt Flo turned to Wynter with a serious look on her face. A look Wynter cannot recall ever seeing before. She held Wynter's hand and looked her in the eye and asked her did she know of anyone with the initials J.P. Of course, Wynter said yes her father. Aunt Flo said this letter couldn't have been written by your father as she handed it to her because it was dated 25 years ago when your father was just a little boy. Wynter was puzzled. Who would be writing a letter About her Before she was born? Why? What was going on? Wynter had been feeling anxious about her life lately but she couldn't quite put her finger on it. Something was definitely in the air. She could not figure out what it was. When her Aunt Flo gave her the letter and then said there's something else, she also gave her the little black book that she said was in the house when she won it in the poker game. Wynter looked at her Aunt and opened her hand to receive the book. Aunt Flo gestured her to open the book.

Wynter nervously opened the little black book with that feeling in the pit of her stomach. Her eyes went straight to J.P., Sr. She thought, J.P., Sr. Her grandfather? She was told he died many years ago. Wynter was going to have a conversation with her dad when she got home. The third page had 9 nine numbers on it that meant nothing to her right away. She did realize after she counted that Jamaica's lottery game required 9 numbers instead of America's six or 5. She immediately called her cousin because she knew her cousin Demetrius would be going to play his weekly numbers and she wanted to catch him before he left. She asked her cousin to play the numbers she read off the list and read them back to her for accuracy. Demetrius was on his way to the store when she called him so it was perfect timing. He played her numbers 23, 25, 14, 20, 5, 18, 4, 1, 25. Demetrius realized he couldn't play 25 twice so he added 2+5 and played 7.

The lottery numbers were announced the next evening while Wynter was still in Brooklyn.

Wynter was not feeling as anxious as she had been recently. After she gave her cousin Demetrius the numbers to play. she calmed down a great deal. She felt good inside. Once again she couldn't quite put her finger on it but she was feeling good.

When Demetrius watched the results being announced that evening, he was holding his ticket and the ticket he purchased for Wynter. As the numbers are being read, Demetrius soon realizes that the numbers are corresponding to Wynter's list. The last number read is a 7 and Demetrius falls off his chair in disbelief. The Jackpot for all 9 number is $20,000 Dollars. No one had ever gotten All Nine Numbers. There were smaller prizes for 8, 6 or 7 correct numbers. This would be the first time in 25 years someone had all 9 numbers correct and won the Jackpot. Wynter Day had her grandfather, J.P., Sr. to thank. Wynter called her parents and told them of the good news. Wynter and Aunt Flo went shopping to celebrate. After all, Wynter would be able to buy her home, give her children options and have some choices, all Thanks to a man she'd never met - J.P., Sr. - Her Grandfather.
