Introduction

Sometimes it is necessary to clear our homes to get rid of things that clutter our living space. As I did just that, I found a copy of a brief presentation that I made to a group of mothers in October 2017. I realize that what I rediscovered was not clutter but words of encouragement to parents with school-aged parents. So, I share these words of reflection with you.

Moments to Meditate: A Parent’s Role in Education

“I would like to share some information about parental engagement that, I believe, will apply to each of you.

No matter what educational choice we make for our children, whether a private, charter, independent, or public school situated in an urban, rural, or suburban learning environment, parent engagement goes beyond the routine evidence that demonstrates that we are involved with and committed to the education of our children. Parental engagement refers to the development and maintenance of a professional relationship with those who educate our children and develop their unique gifts, as well as support their needs in a reciprocated manner. In other words, educators must also share in the relationship-building process with us.

Here is my definition of professional relationships. Parents and educators can interact, collaborate, exchange ideas, give input, and, as parents, have our voices heard in response to needs, concerns, and requests for the betterment of your child’s educational or developmental experience. This must be done in a manner in which we, as the parent, are accepted (that means a willful act of unconditional approval), respected,(that means that our personhood is honored), and affirmed (that means that we are acknowledged, encouraged, and supported). Our children excel at much higher levels whether in the classroom and at school and within athletic or artistic programs when we, as parents, have powerful relationships with their educational and developmental providers.

Most of us are blessed to work with a system of education, with teachers, with youth pastors, and with coaches along with other professionals that we have powerful relationships. However, for the few who may experience pockets of struggle along your child’s educational journey, I encourage you to become empowered to be the builder of the bridge that facilitates relationship building for the sake of your child’s success.

Thank you.”

My Final Thought

Our children deserve the very best opportunities to thrive as learners. Parents who are empowered have the confidence to work with their child’s teachers and school leaders. By doing so, mothers and fathers ensure their children receive the exemplary education that they deserve.

Active levels of parent engagement in education release the best learning experiences for students.

The future of our children is very bright when we are involved in their education.
