pop culture
Some pop-culture families incite envy with their picture-perfection, while others make you acutely grateful for the one you're stuck with.
Christmas Music is Chinese Water Torture for the Soul
How many versions of John Lennon’s Happy Xmas (War Is Over) have to be recorded before war is actually over? I don’t know, but while John rolls over in his grave, artists will keep milking the song for Christmas cash, come hell, high water or… war.

Staycations will be the staple of summer 2021 in the UK. While restrictions ease, the prospect of an international vacation seems limited for many. But there’s no need to worry. With heatwaves, happy vibes, and a little know-how, we can still have a great holiday in our own country.

Cowering under the blankets, my stubby 6 year old hands would move the comforter back by only an inch. It was enough space to breathe fresh air and eyeball the closet without being entirely exposed. Scanning the room for danger, my head would slowly peer out from the sea of stuffed animals to look for "El Cucuy."
Kyra LopezPublished 3 years ago in FamiliesMy first Paint and Sip
My daughter invited me to a Paint and Sip brunch as my Mother's Day gift. This is the first time I had been to such an event. I have been seeing posts on Facebook for several years of couples who have gone to evening painting events but I never had an interest. I'm not much of a drinker so I did not understand why there was such a big deal about sipping a mimosa. I had one that was pineapple and mango and as usual, I did not feel a thing. I also had a large waffle with butter and syrup which was really delicious.

Seven-year-old Alyssa runs energetically across the beach feeling a cool breeze through her waist-length blonde hair and the hot sun on her fair skin. Her blue eyes look down the beach to see the woman with the same hair and eyes lounging in the sun. That is her mother and Alyssa runs towards her giggling. Her mother greets her with a smile as she brushes the sand off her dark purple fishtail.
Erika RavnsborgPublished 3 years ago in FamiliesYou've Got to Be Kidding
My youngest daughters love to watch YouTube family videos. Their current favorites are the SOTY Family and Ninja Kidz TV. I guess I can count my blessings they have moved on from Ryan's World. Good grief...that kid earned 30 million dollars in 2020, opening toys. My kids would do the same for half that...unfortunately, there have been no offers. And quite honestly, I can't afford the stash of toys to unbox until my kiddos monetize a channel.
Life Lessons from the Hallmark Channel
I don’t have a lot of free time. Taking a moment to do something purely enjoyable for myself just doesn’t happen very often. I’ve learned to grab a little joy when I can, namely while simultaneously stress-working, worrying about the day ahead, and folding laundry after everyone has gone to bed. This is time I allow myself to put on some mindless entertainment that doesn’t require me to spend too much of the attention needed to finish my projects. This is why my beloved Hallmark movies are the perfect selection--they’re fun, wholesome, and formulaic enough to give only a percentage of my focus and still enjoy. During this time, I’ve learned a lot of life lessons. Due to the sheer quantity of movies I’ve seen, I’ve become something of an expert on the Hallmark Life in Hallmarkland. I’d like to share some of these shiny pearls of wisdom that I’ve learned from this excellent family programming.

Shit, I think to myself as I another sip of my Dunkin Donuts coffee, my eyes focused on the road in front of me. I was late again. Not just a 3 minutes, or even 10 minutes, it was getting closer and closer to more like 2o minutes or even 25 minutes.
Kelsey TownsendPublished 3 years ago in FamiliesPotato Head, Toy Story, and Muppets: stop sexing childhood
I remember reading a while ago about a long running daytime tv controversy that had mothers clutching pearls and fathers popping monocles everywhere: ARE BERT AND ERNIE GAY?! Can you imagine the generations damaged by this torrid tale of muppet sexuality being slid under our wall of child protectionism?
Dominic McGowanPublished 3 years ago in FamiliesIt's officially Eastertime as the Cadbury Bunny has made an appearance.
The Ground Hog seeing his shadow, or not signifies what the weather will be for the next 6 weeks. There is also something that makes it officially Eastertime at least in my eyes. It's the Cadbury Bunny and he has made his initial appearance for 2021. Since 1984 there have been a variety of television commercials promoting Cadbury creme-filled eggs that are only around in the spring. Today is February 15, there is snow on the ground, the temperature is near freezing in my neck of the woods and warm weather seems a million miles away.
Cheryl E PrestonPublished 3 years ago in FamiliesNot Ashamed of Shameless
I refused to watch Shameless. For years. The first time a friend suggested I watch it, I was put off. She told me about it and it just sounded too much like things I’d seen in real life. It wasn’t entertainment, it was sad. It was wrong to think that I’d want to watch the show just because I was like them in some way. The line was drawn, I wasn’t going there.
