The Ability To Rise
One of my favourite stories my mother used to tell was about defying the odds. Well really, smashing the odds. She always shared the facts of her memory in the same tone and with the same sense of knowing accomplishment. Proud of herself and the feats she had surmounted, yet reserved because of the tolls she knew it took on her longevity. Her sacrifices were both a blessing and a curse. But ultimately, her sense of self worth was the silver lining.

Verna, the Boss of Life
Michigan, in the early 1800’s, the government negotiated terms with the Native Americans where they did not have to leave the area, they resided in. My ancestors did not have to walk the trail of tears due to the savvy negotiations of the untied Tribes of Michigan. Their efforts brought success to the Native people and many families could stay on their lands. I am proud to say that I am living on the same allotted land my Great Grandfather had received in the town of Petoskey Michigan. My grandparent, my mother’s siblings, and now my family live in that same plot of land. When my parents married, they purchased a few lots from my grandparents. After 185 years, we are the only Native family on this street.

Moms
Most people say that their mom is the best mom in the whole world, but in reality every mom is the same. All they want to do is love and protect their children. They teach us things that will help us grow up and lead happy lives. They teach us how to take care of our own families, they teach us how to take care of ourselves and most importantly to care for others. Some moms are never ready to take care of another human being but life happens and they give it their best shot. There are some moms who are not supposed to be mothers but even they try their best. That's what is so great about the existence of moms because no matter the situation and no matter the hardships they try, every single one of them try. One thing my own mom taught me is everything happens for a reason, so when things seem hard it encourages you to hope. You hope for a better tomorrow and you know that what happened today is a lesson learned for the future. Your mother teaches you things she learned in hopes that you won't make the same mistakes, but in the end we all have to learn for ourselves.

Peacock Village
Peacock Village The definition of a Family Tradition is, “an aggregate of attitude, ideas and ideals and environment, which a person inherits from their parents and ancestors”. With family dynamics changing in this world on a daily basis, so does the family tradition. During my time it was something passed down from generation to generation. That’s not true anymore it can be a new tradition that families start and not necessarily one that was passed down. Where does that line cross where it becomes a “Family Tradition” or “Building Memories”? While I say it’s both, friends of mine tend to disagree. This being the case over the last year of lock downs, shutdowns and the unknown, my family found a way to deal with the grand kids schools and activities suddenly being gone, along with everything else in the country.

example and counter
My mother's funeral was at the beginning of this year. Every speaker and contributor to it spoke of how she'd given her entire life over to helping others. She worked tirelessly to improve things for other people. She was beloved for her laughter, her caring, the joy she took in others. She was dyslexic, wheelchair-bound, and in the last five years of her life also entirely blind--none of which stopped her from charity work, from volunteer work, or from her political work. She marched for gay rights, for black lives, for disability rights, for peace. She refused to go quietly into that good night; she was campaigning and fighting for what she believed in right up until she died.

A .38 Special Mom
Moms teach us so many things from the very beginning of our lives. It starts out with the fundamental lessons like how to walk and talk. While these basic lessons are important, our moms teach us far greater ones. I am who I am because of what my mom has taught me.

Boss Mom
The definition of a mother, according to Merriam-Webster, is “a woman in authority.” Well, ain’t that the truth! In Polynesian culture, the makuahine (Hawaiian word for: mother), is the disciplinarian of the ohana (family). They feed you, clothe you, and give you pa’i (spanking) when you are being naughty. My mother is no different. Whenever my sister and I fought, we heard her thundering footsteps coming down the stairs. One by one, one foot after the other, with that slanted, brows scrunched, and fury in her eyes. If I did not finish my homework, smack! When I disrespected a friend or family member, smack! Whenever I talked back, smack…Smack…SMACK!!

Mother: Sword & Shield
Mother may I? Mother may I tell you that whenever my Monday mornings were less than your smile would always shine through and remind me that you are greater than any of the woes in my life. Mother I have watched your life resemble that of amusement parks, ups and downs through sunny shine smiles and foggy little frowns but somehow you would always find your way back to ground level. Life is a journey and I'm just walking along a prosperous path, if not for your life lessons that you taught in my days this day would never come to pass. Fragmented memories of my youth stored away in the cabinets of my mind. From time to time I revisit the cultivated days of my youth, my innocence, infancy, my childhood, adolescence my truth.

Mama, eternally young
Last November, I lost both of my parents within a week of each other. They died two days apart from different illnesses. First, my father passed away and two days later my mother. At the funeral, the priest said that despite their terrible loss, these two people were blessed because they had lived together for more than 60 years and died together. They were buried in the same grave.

To All Mothers Past, Present & Future
I would like to honour ALL mothers: our mother Earth-Gaia, mother-figures past, present and future and my own Mother; Susan. While our time together was only a short interlude; as a seven-year-old child, losing a mother to cancer is never easy. I believe she has never left my side and is still guiding me on my own journey. Her legacy comes in the form of a book of poems she had written before her untimely passing – her hopes, loves and dreams shine through with each word she wrote.
