"Green Eggs and Ham" by Dr. Seuss

Hello, readers! Are you excited about this week's book, Green Eggs, and Ham by Dr. Seuss? During this week's storytime, we follow Sam as he tries to convince his friend to try out new food. Now Sam is very persistent readers! He really wants his friend to try this new food, but his friend just won't have it! Readers, why do you think he will not try the new food that Sam is offering him? (click the underlined word "storytime" to go straight to the Green Ham and Eggs episode!)

Word of the day! Readers do you know what the word "persistent" means? Click the underlined word persistent above and follow the link! Have an adult help read what persistent means and talk about how it relates to our story!

Let's make it fun! Put your imagination hats on! Imagine you are a character in the book, Green Eggs and Ham! Would you try Green Eggs and Ham? Would it take Sam I Am as long to convince you to try the new food? Can you think of another new or silly food that can be in the story instead? What would it be?

Put on your imagination hats! Draw or write a story that decribes what would happen if YOU were in the story. Would you be as "persistent" if you were Sam I Am? If you were Sam I Am's friend, would you try the Green Eggs and Ham? Would you change the food choice in the book? If so what would it be? Use your wonderful imaginations readers!

Circle Time Notes:

Well, for starters green eggs and ham are well...GREEN! Have you ever seen Green Eggs and Ham? Well readers, as we learn from the book, just because a food looks different doesn't mean you won't like it! Sometimes it can be scary to try new food, but we always want to try it first before we decide if we like it or not. Now when Sam's friend in the book finally tries Green Eggs and Ham, he finds he likes it after all! How do you think Sam's friend felt about trying the new food? Have you ever felt nervous about trying new food?

Here are some tips for trying a new food:

1. Try a small amount! Sometimes it helps to just try a bit of the new food at a time to ease yourself into it.

2. Talk about the food! Talk about the new food with someone! This helps you get your feelings heard and get new information about the food you are about to try.

3. If you don't like it the first time, try again later! It's ok not to like a new food at first. It's perfectly ok to come back later and try again!

4. Remember you will not like every new food, and that's ok. It's ok not to like new food! At least you have tried the food and decided it wasn't for you. Good job!

5. Describe the food! What color is it? What does the food feel like? Is it hot or cold? Getting to know your food will make it less scary to try it!

Draw a picture or write about a time you tried new food and post it (with an adult's help!) to my Facebook (Winter Madison) and Instagram (winter_the_author).
