Doll heroine - பொம்மை நாயகி: Movie Review

A Common Man Struggles For `Justice';

Kudos to debutant director Shaun for bravely speaking about something that society needs! A film to name Yogi Babu after 'Mandela'. A deep character who carries the weight of the whole story. But...

This ``doll heroine'' is the one who tells whether the justice struggle of a common man suffering from domination mania is successful or not!

Yogi Babu, who works in a tea shop in Cuddalore, is a simple man who lives alone with his daughter Tommy Naiki and his wife Kayalvizhi. A doting father who is delighted to see his daughter Puppet Naiki studying well. Yogi Babu wants to take the next step in his life by buying the shop when the owner of his shop becomes ill.

Then a sudden incident happens in his life. A puppet heroine is sexually assaulted by two men belonging to the dominant caste in the town. Although Yogi Babu saved his daughter from the murderers in time, he could not punish the culprits. The fanaticism of the dominant caste creates an environment where the victims themselves run away. After committing wrongdoing, the dominant casteist gangs roam the town without any sense of guilt or fear. The police are trying to cover up the injustice done to them. The rest of the story tells whether Yogi Babu, who is fighting against this with the help of communist comrades, was able to get justice.

Kudos to debutant director Shaun for bravely speaking about something that society needs! A film to name Yogi Babu after `Mandela'. A deep character who carries the weight of the whole story. He has added some justice to the role of a commoner by acting without smiling throughout the film. But even in the scene where he had to burst into tears, he acted calmly without any temptation. Even after the injustice done to his daughter, the incident fails to resonate with the audience as he has no emotional sins.

Smriti is the perfect choice as the 9 year old story heroine puppet heroine. 'Bharat Mata I am!' By saying that, he acts normal and gains sympathy. Subatra, who comes as Yogi Babu's wife, has played the role very naturally. GM Kumar as Yogi Babu's father, Aruldas as his brother, Jayachandran as his friend, Harikrishnan as a communist comrade, and rock star Ramanyammal in the comedy role of singer Landu Panna have played well.

Recently, many films have been released with the plot of child sexual abuse. So, before watching the film, the expectation that 'Pommai Nayaki' will stand out from it in any way arises. However, the pressure of the first half was not present in the courtroom scenes in the second half. Even the trial and the course of the case are boringly similar to the cinematic courtroom scenes we are used to before.

Showing the ground reality that 'Court can only punish the criminals...cannot provide protection to the victims' threatens to spoil the very purpose of the film. This also reinforces the idea that the victim is not wrong to bend the law to get justice. Thus the film conveys to the audience the confusion of trusting the law or not.

After the film 'Azhagi', the camera of Zukhararaj has showcased the Cuddalore region with its geological beauty. Editing by Selva RK is perfect. Music by Sundaramurthy, the songs are pleasing to the ears. Could have paid more attention to the background music.

'Pommai Naayiki' would have made its mark as one of the inevitable films in Tamil cinema if there had been the reality in the lines like 'You are the first lady urber Ketkurappabe Ketkurappa why you are listening sir', 'Tappu Senchavan is all happy but only the victim is suffering?' '.

It is a film with a good concept that society needs. But, if she had paid attention to the way it was said and the screenplay, this ``pommai heroine'' would have won everyone's heart!
