“Cocaine Bear” is an incredible and transformative motion picture that will mark a new era in society. This violent comedy/thriller by director Elizabeth Banks is best enjoyed with a packed crowd as it is an essential communal experience. “Cocaine Bear” knows exactly what it is and what it needs to do, and that is to showcase a bear on cocaine. This movie has often been compared to the 2006 hit “Snakes on a Plane” due to its high-concept, wild-animal premise and giddy hype that preceded it. The film is based on a true story about a 175-pound Georgia black bear that ingested cocaine that a drug smuggler dropped from an airplane in 1985. The screenwriter, Jimmy Warden, imagined what might have happened if the bear hadn’t died and instead sampled the stuff and got hooked. The bear then goes on a murderous rampage in the forest, crossing paths with hikers, rangers, criminals, and police officers in her need for the next fix.

“Cocaine Bear” begins with an unrecognizable Matthew Rhys maniacally dumping duffel bags of powder with the intent to retrieve them later. Several people, including a pair of mismatched buddy drug dealers, their humorless boss, and a police detective, go on a hunt for them as they lay scattered throughout Georgia’s Chattahoochee National Forest. Also wandering around the woods that day are a park ranger and a wildlife specialist, a bunch of doofus teenagers, and a determined single mom looking for her 13-year-old daughter and her daughter’s friend who ditched school to visit the falls.

The look of the creature itself is another element of joy for “Cocaine Bear”. She is surprisingly high-tech for a cheesy and silly movie, and has been brought to life through a motion capture performance by stuntman Allan Henry and CGI from the legendary New Zealand house Weta FX. They’ve definitely amped up the movements and anthropomorphized the animal to a knowing extreme, but they achieve enough realism to make the bear’s attacks harrowing.

Despite the fact that some standout supporting players evolve in surprising ways, the suspense that had carried the film for so long is lost when the filmmakers attempt to make us care about the characters as actual people. The violence in the film is often graphic and gory, but it is not gratuitous, and some of the gnarliest moments come not from the bear herself, but rather from all of these people being stupid and finding other ways to get injured.

For all of these reasons and more, “Cocaine Bear” is a movie that you will not regret watching. Its quirky elements make it unique and memorable, and you will probably find yourself rooting for the bear to succeed.
