Kevin Presley and his father, Frank, have grown apart over the years. Kevin used to idolize his dad, but as he got older, he realized that Frank's lofty ambitions often led to disappointment and heartache for the family. Frank's latest scheme seems no different, and Kevin expects that their family will end up moving yet again.

However, their new home comes with an unexpected twist - it's haunted by the ghost of Ernest, which is the reason for the low price. The previous tenants have all fled, leaving the Presleys with an undead housemate they didn't ask for.

While Ernest tries to scare the family away, Kevin sees an opportunity to help the ghost find peace and move on. However, Frank sees Ernest as a potential cash cow and begins exploiting their supernatural roommate for online fame and sponsorships.

As their videos go viral, the government takes notice, and the CIA sets their sights on capturing Ernest for their own purposes. Kevin finds himself torn between doing what's right for Ernest and protecting him from his father's greed, while also trying to evade the government's grasp.

Kevin Presley feels estranged from his father, Frank, and their once-close relationship has faded over the years. As Kevin matures, he realizes that Frank's heroic persona was a facade.

Frank has dragged his family from one place to another, chasing dreams that have turned into nightmares, leaving them with nothing after falling for a pyramid scheme. Kevin expects the worst with Frank's latest venture and fears that his mother will suffer once again, resulting in another move.

However, Kevin's expectations shift when they discover their new home is haunted, which explains its low cost. The previous tenants have all fled, leaving Ernest, the friendly but private ghost, as their uninvited guest. Kevin takes it upon himself to help Ernest find closure and "cross over" despite his father's opportunistic plans.

Frank sees Ernest as a means to gain internet fame, and his videos go viral, leading to sponsorship deals and a chance to earn a significant amount of money. Unfortunately, his pursuit of profit causes more harm than good and ultimately exposes the ghost's presence to the government.

The CIA takes an interest in Ernest and has sinister intentions for the supernatural entity. Kevin and Ernest's quest for peace and closure becomes a race against time to protect the ghost from the government and the destructive desires of Kevin's father.
