Evil Dead rise movie review 2023
When it comes to horror franchises, few can boast the consistent quality of the "Evil Dead" series. Over the course of more than four decades, there has yet to be a bad movie bearing its name. This is in large part thanks to series creator Sam Raimi, who has been picky about who he lets play with his groovy blood-soaked baby. In fact, there have only been five "Evil Dead" movies to date. But it's not just Raimi's oversight that has made the franchise a success. There's also something about the elemental simplicity of the series' premise that just works.

Beau is afraid movie review 2023
“Beau Is Afraid” is a dark comedy written and directed by Ari Aster, known for his trauma-filled horror dramas “Hereditary” and “Midsommar”. The film tells the story of Beau, played by Joaquin Phoenix, who is stuck in a hellish landscape in a downtown neighbourhood defined by violence and madness. Working with production designer Fiona Crombie, Aster captures this sumptuous chaos like Peter Greenaway did long dining tables in “The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover.” The world-building for Beau is like a furious overture of the towering anxieties we’ll see later in present-time and in flashback: a lack of personal space, the threat of being unable to please others, and the impossibility of rampant bad luck.

Chupa movie review 2023
The film "Chupa" is a heartwarming family movie with an irresistibly adorable beast buddy at its center. Chupa, a puppy-cat with wings, is hard not to love as he coos, chitters, and sometimes purrs his way into our hearts. His wings are a rainbow-colored marvel, especially when he flaps them while learning to fly. Chupa is a breath of fresh air for a character who is usually associated with goat-killing and sharp fangs, which is a far cry from the previous movie images of Mexico's mythical el chupacabra.

Creed 3 movie review 2023
Michael B. Jordan, in his directorial debut, takes on the ninth film of the Rocky franchise, Creed III. He not only directs the film but stars in it as Adonis Creed, the son of Apollo Creed. Jordan follows in the footsteps of Sylvester Stallone, who directed himself in four Rocky movies, and Ryan Coogler, who directed the original Creed. Jordan succeeds in creating a movie that both honors the legacy of the series and moves the story forward. He elicits powerhouse performances from his co-stars, including Jonathan Majors, who plays Adonis’ childhood friend-turned-adversary.

Cloud atlas 2012 released movie review 2023
As I watched "Cloud Atlas" for the first time, I knew that I would have to watch it again. And now, having seen it twice, I'm convinced that I need to watch it a third time. However, I no longer believe that repeated viewings will unravel the complexities of this film. To quote Churchill, "it is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma." It's mesmerizing in the moment, but getting from one moment to the next is a daunting task.

Murder mystery 2 movie review 2023
JHave you ever revisited a movie and found yourself enjoying it more than you did the first time around? That's what happened to me with "Murder Mystery," the 2019 comedy/thriller starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. I originally gave it a modest two stars, but now I think it deserves another half-star as a solid diversion. Sandler's charm is once again the strength of the film, and the relatively tight runtime of 90 minutes keeps the humor from becoming bloated or meandering.

Honor Among Thieves is an action-packed movie starring Chris Pine as Edgin, Michelle Rodriguez as Holga, Justice Smith as Simon, Sophia Lillis as Doric, Regé-Jean Page as Xenk, and Hugh Grant as Forge. The film follows Edgin, Holga, and a con man named Forge, who were hired by a mysterious woman, Sofina, to steal an item from a heavily guarded vault of goodies. Among the items was a Tablet of Reawakening, which Edgin hoped to use to revive his long-deceased wife. However, things went awry, and Edgin and Holga ended up in prison, while Forge and Sofina got away with the Tablet and the bounty.

The lost king Movie review 2023
The story of Philippa Langley’s quest to find Richard III’s remains is one of the most fascinating tales of modern historical detective work. Director Stephen Frears’ “The Lost King” tells her story, based on Langley's book “The Search for Richard III,” with Sally Hawkins in the lead role. Langley, not a historian or academic, stumbled upon a pamphlet inviting her to join the Richard III Society, which sought to change the much-maligned monarch's historical legacy. Intrigued, she attended her first meeting held in the back of a pub and became involved in a lifelong passion for uncovering the truth about the last Plantagenet king.

The five Devils movie review
French writer/director Léa Mysius weaves an intriguing web of a supernatural thriller with her latest film, “The Five Devils,” which explores themes of racism, sexism, small-town provincialism, and homophobia. However, while the film features captivating performances and striking visuals, it falls short of the director's intended potency.

The tutor movie review 2023
Garrett Hedlund’s onscreen presence is a subject of ambivalence for many, but even his most ardent detractors will likely find themselves sympathizing with the actor as they slog through “The Tutor.” Directed by Jordan Ross and written by Ryan King, the film is a thriller that lacks any real sense of consequence or intrigue.

Furies Movie review 2023
Dynamic action filmmaking is a force to be reckoned with in "Furies," the latest Vietnamese martial arts film that serves as a prequel to the acclaimed 2019 film "Furie." While not directly related to "Furie," "Furies" shares the same universe, with the film's director, Veronica Ngo, taking a step behind the camera for the first time to tell the backstory of Thanh Soi, the scene-stealing baddy from the previous film.

Waco movie review 2023
Documentaries are having a hard time competing with the ever-diminishing attention spans of viewers who have an overwhelming amount of options to choose from in the streaming era. While it's a common problem that filmmakers face, it seems to have been only resolved in the short term with the heavy-handed approach seen in "Waco: American Apocalypse," now on Netflix. Many modern documentaries begin with sensational thesis statements that promise the viewer an exciting experience, but "Waco: American Apocalypse" is more like a 150-minute trailer with minimal emotional investment, despite the intricate material, difficult questions, and expansive grey areas that come with retracing what happened in Waco, Texas, in 1993. The series focuses on the 51-day standoff between heavily armed cult leader David Koresh, his Branch Davidian followers, and American armed forces, which began when ATF agents were following through on a warrant for illegal machine guns. A shootout ensued, with dead and wounded on both sides. For Koresh, it was a prophecy. He had been calling himself Jesus Christ to his flock of approximately 100 people and had been hyping them about defending themselves during an apocalypse, one that was brought to their door.
