5 Awesome Family Activities to Do This Summer

Summer is always a great time to spend with your family, but sometimes it can be hard to come up with ideas for fun things to do. If you're having this problem, don't worry, we've got the solution. Here are five awesome family summer activities.

1. Go Swimming

Visiting a local swimming pool in the summer is a pretty obvious activity to do with your family, but sometimes it just isn't practical due to cost, or travel time. One great idea to get around these problems is to buy a swimming pool for your backyard. It doesn't have to be a huge one, there are plenty of smaller variants available as well.

In addition to swimming pools, you can also have a lot of fun with a simple sprinkler system. This tends to be a good option for younger children, especially if you don't plan on supervising them 100% of the time.

Another water-based activity that can be fun for the whole family are battles with water balloons or squirt guns. Just make sure the water balloons are made correctly; otherwise, they can be more painful than fun. Instructions are easy to find, too.

2. Sports!

Take advantage of the warm weather and get outside for some sporting activities with your family. You can play games as simple as tossing around a football, or play some actual basketball and keep score.

If official sports games are a bit much for you to handle, there are always other games you can do as well, such as tag, hide and seek, and dodgeball. In any case, it's a great change to have fun with your family and enjoy the sun.

Also, keep in mind that if your children play a sport for school or for a recreational department, they'll likely need practice. Don't be afraid to turn their practice into a family activity and help them to improve their game.

3. Stargazing and Sunbathing

These two activities are very similar, yet very different at the same time. Stargazing is obviously done at night, taking advantage of the warm weather. This can be a great opportunity to have a simple chat with your family, or just enjoy one another's company in silence. If you live in an area where it's a bit cooler at night, you can use fleece fabric blankets to lay down on and keep warm.

Sunbathing on the other hand is going to require supplies such as swimwear, sunscreen, and sunglasses. You and your family can take the day off and work on your tan. Just be sure not to stay out too long.

4. Sell Lemonade and More

If your family is the entrepreneurial sort, you can make some extra cash selling lemonade or other beverages in front of your home. This, of course, works best if you live in a high foot traffic area, and you'll also want to make sure you have a business permit if one is required where you live.

You can also sell other summertime items such as ice cream. You can buy it at the store and mark up the price, or have fun making it at home. Either way, this will be a good opportunity to teach your children about how simple economics work.

5. Backyard Barbecue

One of the best family activities you can do in the summer is having a backyard barbecue. This tasty tradition is a wonderful excuse to prepare an amazing meal for your family, and enjoy some of your favorite grilled foods. From chicken, to pork, to beef biscuit, there are tons of different foods to grill and enjoy.

One option to consider this summer if you're going to be cooking out is to look up some new recipes you haven't tried before.

Summer Fun is All Around You

The great thing about coming up with ideas for summer fun with your family is that you can get as creative as you want. While all the ones we discussed take place outside, you're free to do indoor activities as well. Board games, movies, parties, and more can all be done in the comfort of your air conditioned home.

In any case, make sure you take the time to appreciate your family and spend time with them this summer. You'll be glad you did.
