If your life were a romantic comedy, meeting your significant other would be magical, with you two locking eyes and knowing that they are “The One” from the first encounter. You’d spend time baking together, taking romantic strolls, and enjoying other cute activities. However, in reality, relationships don't always begin cinematically. The early stages of a relationship can be tricky to navigate, but they can make or break the longevity of your romance. To help you start on the right foot, here are 15 key pieces of new-relationship advice.

1.Avoid focusing on the past and instead concentrate on the present. Bringing your fears and negative experiences to a new relationship can prevent you from truly being happy. Don't distrust your new partner based on an ex-relationship; instead, focus on their positive qualities.

2.Take time to know your partner's personality and traits before discussing dating history. Don't rush to reveal what went wrong in your past relationship or to find out about their dating past.

3.Ensure that you're attracted to the person and not just the idea of being in a relationship. Sometimes, we become so fixated on finding a happily-ever-after that we overlook flaws or red flags. Take your partner at face value and decide if they would still be someone you want to spend time with, regardless of whether they are "The One."

4.Don't skip the sex talk. If you're not comfortable discussing sexual health with your partner, you're not ready to be intimate. Discuss your likes and dislikes and what you are comfortable with while listening to theirs without judgment. Remember that the "right time" to be intimate is different for every couple.

5.Meet each other's friends. Early on in a relationship, meeting friends is crucial as it gives insight into your partner and the relationship. If your partner's friends are people you would never get along with, then you might not know your partner as well as you think.

6.Avoid having important conversations over text. Texting is convenient for daily check-ins, but discussing feelings or disagreements should always be done in person. Misunderstandings can arise, and a lot can be lost in translation when communicating over text.

7.Be yourself. Trying to be someone you're not to impress your partner is a waste of time. Be honest and upfront about your likes, dislikes, and who you are. Don't pretend to like things you don't, and don't hide your true self.

8.Practice active listening: Listen attentively to your partner, ask questions, and clarify any misunderstandings. This shows that you care about what they are saying and helps to avoid miscommunication.

9. Be honest: Honesty is essential for a healthy relationship. Be truthful with your partner even if it's difficult to hear.

10.Practice forgiveness: Forgiveness is key to moving forward and building a strong relationship. Forgive your partner for their mistakes and work towards a resolution.

11. Be open-minded: Be open to your partner's perspective and opinions, even if they differ from your own. This helps to build mutual respect and understanding.

12.Keep things interesting: Keep the relationship fun and exciting by trying new things and exploring new experiences together.

13. Don't ignore red flags: Pay attention to red flags and address them early on in the relationship. This can help to avoid larger issues down the line.

15. Prioritize the relationship: Make the relationship a priority in your life and commit to working on it. A healthy relationship takes effort and commitment from both parties.

However, you should have clarity about whether or not you’re both seeing other people, and you should know if you’re on the same page in terms of keeping it casual or looking for something serious (always be open about what you want).
