Volkswagen's fastest car ever is the Volkswagen ID.R electric race car, which set a number of speed records in 2018 and 2019. The ID.R is a purpose-built electric race car that was designed specifically to tackle some of the world's most challenging courses and set new records.

Volkswagen History

In 2018, the ID.R set a new record for electric cars at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, completing the 12.4-mile course in just 7 minutes and 57.148 seconds. The following year, the car set a new lap record for electric cars at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, completing the 12.9-mile course in just 6 minutes and 5.336 seconds.

It's worth noting that while the ID.R is Volkswagen's fastest car ever, it is not a production vehicle and is not available for purchase. It is a highly specialized race car that was built specifically for setting speed records. Volkswagen's fastest production car is the Volkswagen Golf R, which has a top speed of around 155 mph (250 km/h) and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in around 4.5 seconds.

What other records has the ID.R set?

The Volkswagen ID.R electric race car has set several other records in addition to the Pikes Peak and Nürburgring records I mentioned earlier. Here are some of the other speed records that the ID.R has set:

1. Goodwood Festival of Speed Hill Climb: In 2019, the ID.R set a new record for the Goodwood Festival of Speed hill climb, completing the 1.16-mile course in just 39.9 seconds.

2. Tianmen Mountain Big Gate Road: The ID.R set a new record for the Tianmen Mountain Big Gate Road in China in 2019, completing the 6.8-mile course in just 7 minutes and 38.585 seconds.

3. Electric lap record at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps: In 2019, the ID.R set a new electric lap record at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium, completing the 4.3-mile course in just 1 minute and 41.34 seconds.

4. Electric lap record at the Goodwood Motor Circuit: In addition to setting the hill climb record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the ID.R also set a new electric lap record at the Goodwood Motor Circuit in 2019, completing the 2.36-mile course in just 41.18 seconds.

These records demonstrate the impressive performance capabilities of the ID.R and highlight the potential of electric race cars to compete with and even surpass traditional combustion engine race cars in terms of speed and performance.

What other electric race cars are currently competing with combustion engine race cars?

Electric race cars are becoming increasingly common in motorsports, and many of them are now competing with combustion engine race cars on some of the world's most challenging courses. Here are some examples of electric race cars that are currently competing with combustion engine race cars:

1. Formula E: Formula E is a fully electric single-seater racing series that was launched in 2014. It features some of the world's top drivers and races on street circuits in cities around the world. Formula E cars are capable of reaching speeds of up to 174 mph (280 km/h) and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in around 2.8 seconds.

2. Extreme E: Extreme E is a new off-road racing series that was launched in 2021. It features electric SUVs that are capable of racing in some of the world's most extreme environments, including deserts, glaciers, and rainforests. Extreme E cars can reach speeds of up to 120 mph (193 km/h) and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in around 4.5 seconds.

3. Le Mans Prototype (LMP) Electric: The Le Mans Prototype (LMP) Electric is an electric race car that was developed by the French automaker, Spark Racing Technology. It is designed to compete in endurance races, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans. LMP Electric cars are capable of reaching speeds of up to 220 mph (354 km/h) and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in around 2.5 seconds.

4. Volkswagen ID.R: While the Volkswagen ID.R is not currently competing in any racing series, it has demonstrated
