This Dad Died Saving Her daughter in Plane With Bear hugs.
While all three adult passengers and the pilot were killed, 11-year-old Laney Perdue suffered only some broken bones — because her father's protected her with a hug.
On that Saturday afternoon, Mike Perdue and his 11-year-old daughter Laney Perdue boarded a small commuter plane bound for Beaver Island on Lake Michigan. They were joined by a couple transporting their two dogs to the vet. But the plane crashed at 2:30 p.m., killing everyone but Laney — who was saved by her father’s bear hug.
A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter training nearby quickly arrived at the scene and airlifted Laney and the pilot, William Julian, to the nearby McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital. Julian died during the airlift, but Laney survived with five broken bones — on the other side of where her dad was seated.
Before they left that Saturday afternoon, Mike hugged his wife Christie and their three children Addie, Henrik, and Bo goodbye, without knowing those hugs were going to be the last.
Christie said: "He gave me this huge hug, let go for a minute and then squeezed me super tight again.
"Mike is known for his bear hugs."
“I believe that it would make sense to me that her injuries were on the one side, and the other side was with her dad, that he was holding her,” Christie said.
“In my heart of hearts, I know that he truly did save her, and he protected her. He was just a beautiful human and loved his community, and he loved Beaver Island. I’m not surprised at all that he did that, that he sacrificed, and he was her hero.”
Mike Perdue, a successful managing broker and co-owner of the Smith Realty Group in Gaylord, Michigan, is a father of four. He loved going to Beaver Island during his free time, and he had plans to meet his buddy and coworker there on the first day of deer season.
According to ABC News, the twin-engine Island Airways plane had departed from Charlevoix, Michigan, around 2 p.m. and was preparing to land at Welke Airport when an unknown error occurred, causing the plane to crash into the tarmac. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are currently investigating the cause of the crash.
Laney remembers peering through ‘one of those little windows and seeing the grass and feeling my dad's arm around me’.
She explained: "I felt this feeling in my stomach like the plane just dropped, and my dad had his feet out like he was bracing for something.
"The last thing I remember is my dad giving me the tightest hug ever.
“I'm alive because of him."
With 11 broken bones and injuries to her lip and mouth, Laney was the lone survivor of the collision.
Her father saved her from worse injuries, according to the emergency personnel that arrived on the scene.
After finally realizing her father had passed away, Laney made the decision to honor him by walking during his funeral.
She transitioned from a wheelchair to crutches after having surgery on her foot and jaw, and she was able to walk behind her father's casket while using them.
Laney remembers Mike as ‘the best girl dad’ who enjoyed ‘the little moments in life’.
She said: "Every day he would wake up and be like, 'You guys are beautiful. You guys are special.'
"He was amazing."
The mourning family now preserves his memory by recording their memories in a book and is preparing to visit Beaver Island again soon.
Christie said: "Years ago, he said, 'Promise me if something ever happens to me, you keep coming to the island with the kids.'”
She added: "It's the greatest tragedy and the greatest joy. We lost Mike, but we kept Laney."
Laney concluded: "I'm so sad, but I know Dad would want us to be okay. He would want us to live."
