The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo ( The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo) is a book by Taylor Jenkins that has a large fan base and almost two hundred thousand reviews on Goodreads. At first I didn't plan to read it, what's more, before Goodreads recommended it to me I didn't even know it existed, but after seeing some people's opinions I decided it was worth giving it a try.

Monique is a journalist who works in a very famous magazine called Vivant and, however, she is not highly valued in her work. She is in a somewhat difficult stage in her life, since her husband has just left her and she does not have much support from almost anyone, only from her mother who does not live in the same area as her. .

On the other hand we have Evelyn Hugo, a well-known actress who, after having been working for a large part of her career in Hollywood, is now almost eighty years old.

Monique's life takes a 180 degree turn when Evelyn Hugo asks her to write her biography: her real life behind the scenes, from her start in Hollywood to the present day.

At first Monique is not one hundred percent sure she wants to do it, because after all it is a person of prestige and she is the opposite: an ordinary journalist. However, she decides to take the plunge and write her biography, as it is a great opportunity for her future that she cannot let go of.

Evelyn Hugo and Monique meet day in and day out with the aim of finishing as soon as possible. She listens to every word that comes out of that lady's mouth, increasingly fascinated by how transparent she is in telling her story, her thoughts, and her decisions. The reason for each marriage and her experience with each husband.

The book itself enchanted me. Taylor Jenkins' way of narrating is simply wonderful, without filler pages, without frills... A plot so well done that it could easily be taken to the big screen.

My favorite character without a doubt has been Evelyn Hugo. Her way of being, so unique and real is what has captivated me. One aspect that I have loved about her is her determination to achieve things despite being in an era where women do not have the same rights as men. As they say throughout the book, Evelyn achieves everything she sets out to do, regardless of how difficult it is.

Also, throughout history I have realized what she is capable of sacrificing to protect her loved ones at all costs. And coming from a book it might seem normal, but you have no idea how well told it is and the empathy you can feel.

"Sometimes the pain was stronger than the need to save face."

On the other hand we have Monique, a girl who has not been as exceptional as Evelyn. Rather she would characterize her as a simple, flat and very common character. It is true that she is a person with problems, and she can be seen to mature throughout the plot. However, not having so much prominence in the book does not get to have that connection.

The secondary characters are very present in the story, and it is because of them that a large part of Evelyn's dramas take place. As I said before, she can empathize a lot with the characters even though more and more are added as the story goes on.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is a very addictive and easy to read book. There are people who complain about the translation, which I can't say if it's true or not, since I read it in English ( The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo) . But don't get carried away by those little flaws because they don't do the story justice.

It's not a predictable book, at least the important parts didn't seem that way to me, and the constant change in Evelyn's life makes you keep your eyes glued to the pages as if there was no tomorrow.

The play, set in the present day and at the same time in the fifties, is a very original story full of drama and romance.

One aspect that struck me a lot was the personality of the protagonist and the surprises she brings with her. Evelyn is not a woman that you meet every day on the street, and she knows better than anyone what she is worth.

Evelyn Hugo is that type of character that is not forgotten and that is etched in your mind.

"Never let anyone make you feel ordinary."

It touches on very taboo topics, including what's behind the scenes. I have been fascinated by the way in which the lives of celebrities are explained behind the scenes, and how different what we read in magazines can be from reality. It also touches on the subject of homophobia, personal problems and many more things that are not worth explaining here, when it is clearly seen in the book.

It is a read that I have enjoyed enormously and that has transported me to the fifties in an unimaginable way. Taylor Jenkins ' writing style had me hooked until the last page. And it is the drama that there is and the plot twists are so many that I could not stop reading.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is one of those books that you start without really knowing what you are going to find and that finally make you fall in love.

This work has taught me how different the reality of Hollywood is from what we see on television constantly. Not all that glitters is gold, and the author has captured it fantastically.

I can't finish this review without telling you to give this book a chance, because I have no doubt that if anyone asks me for any recommendations, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo will be on the list.
