The Best Teachers Have Real World Experience (Opinion)
I have the utmost respect for all those people who teach, have taught and will teach; whatever route they take to do so. It’s not an easy profession and definitely not a leave it at the door kind of job. During the time that I taught in secondary schools, I noticed differences between those teachers who had spent all their lives in education and those who had come into teaching later in life after having had another career. The points I mention below are not indicative of every teacher who never left education. Of course they aren’t. But they are the things that I observed that made me believe that the best teachers had been out in the real world and gained some experience before coming back to share their knowledge.

Old School Punishment
One day, a little boy named Benjamin was taken to school by his parents. He was only six years old and it was his first day in kindergarten. He was very anxious about being a big boy like his mother told him that he would be, but he was nervous because he didn’t know the other kids. None of them lived in his neighborhood and he wasn’t sure if they would like him.

Help! I’m a Substitute Teacher with No Lesson Plans! Part 2
As discussed in "Help! I'm a Substitute Teacher with No Lesson Plans! Part 1," walking into a classroom and being expected to teach a group of students when you were not provided lesson plans or the proper supplies to carry the plans left to you can be a stressful situation. Below are some tried and true activities I have used that fill time and keep students engaged. The hardest part about being left to teach a class with no lesson plans is finding enough activities to keep the students from acting poorly. Even though some of these activities are not necessarily the most intellectually stimulating, they are educational and will keep most students busy depending on their age.

This Ten-Minute Survey Will Change How You Teach Forever
Every day for one week I handed my 10th grade history class a form, marked in ten-minute increments. It asked two questions: Are you on task or off right now? And: What did you learn in the last ten minutes?
