Oprah's Academy is Shutting its Door...And I am NOT Surprised. Content Warning.
Oprah Winfrey's Academy is closing its doors this year. Oprah announced that 2027 would be the year the academy shut down after 20 years. The Academy was founded in 2007 in South Africa for young girls ages 12 to 17. The academy had a 52-acre campus with buildings that include classrooms, science laboratories, a library, a theater/auditorium, dormitories, sports facilities, and other student resources. The academy had its praises and controversy, which didn't surprise me, that it is shutting down. Here's the story why....

An ESL Teacher's Thoughts on Education in the U.S
In a just society, education is not a privilege; it is the simplest of expectations. Parents in these rational nations demand that their children study an expansive range of subjects. No topic is coveted over others. Philosophy and Religious texts are read alongside scientific studies. History is returned to with deep, critical reflection. Cultural studies are embraced with respect, and complex Math problems are patiently explained.

Cultural clash in teacher evaluation: Do you prefer American "fake happy" positivity, or European harsh honesty?
Imagine being a student from Central or Eastern Europe and getting a standard American teacher evaluation form. The task seems simple enough: rate your English instructor across five basic areas. But the moment you grab your pen, you hit an invisible, solid wall. You suddenly crash right into the massive, historical divide between our direct, no-nonsense mentality and the transatlantic cult of the forced permanent smile. In our part of the world, we are naturally hardwired to say things exactly as they are—matter-of-factly, raw, and straight to the point. If a class is boring, we say it’s boring. If a person is cold, we don't sit there and pretend they are our long-lost best friend. In the United States, however, the playing field is entirely different. Their culture is fundamentally programmed from birth around ultimate motivation, relentless positive reinforcement, and a desperate effort to look "happy" at all absolute costs. Anything that isn’t labeled as amazing, mind-blowing, or perfect is instantly perceived over there as a brutal, personal attack.

Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia
Dyspraxia, Dislexia, and Discalculia: I have all three. Dyspraxia is a spacial disability that makes it hard to tell where you are within a given space. I accidentally run into the sides of walls a lot because I cannot tell where the true ending of the door space is. I am also terrible at platform games and have a funny time playing them, but of course still enjoy. This causes me to be naturally worse at balance than other people so I practice balance every week with a balance board.

The Day the Teacher Closed His Eyes: A Story About a Stolen Watch and Pure Humanity
A brief encounter on a busy street, a few polite words exchanged, perhaps a sudden smile triggered by a shared memory from the past. The old teacher looked closely at his former student's face, searching through decades of academic memories, but ultimately shook his head. "I am sorry," the old man said gently, "I don't quite remember you." The young man smiled warmly. "I was your student, many years ago." That in itself is always a beautiful encounter. Teachers rarely know where their students end up, what they become, or how life shapes them after they walk out of the school gates for the last time.

The Writing Prompt Box: The Beginning of an Experiment.
A Glossy Green Box of Prompts For years, I've had a small glossy green box on my desk. It followed me from one classroom or school to another. The box is entitled “Writing Prompts” and states that it is part of “Teacher Created Resources”. I assume it’s a company that has released a series of these (in this case, the one I have is for level 6 -- most likely for 6th grade level).

Organizing a class reunion twenty years after elementary school is usually filled with anticipation. People meet again after years apart, compare their lives, and remember a time when their biggest problems were forgotten homework assignments or a note in their school diary.

The value of Assessments in the Classroom
The Dilemma of Proper Placement A dilemma teachers and administrators face each year is the proper placement or designation of a student. This problem stems from the various educational, socioeconomic or physical/mental developmental backgrounds a student may have. As a result, not all students will fit in the same group. How does one separate or place students in the right class or program?

Visa Rules Under Fire: New 4-Year/240-Day Cap on Student and Journalist Visas Gets Sued
I didn’t expect to be reading about visa rules on a Tuesday morning, but this one hit different. The government just put a new limit in place: student visas and journalist visas will now have a hard cap of 4 years, with a maximum of 240 days for extensions. And within days, unions representing universities, news organizations, and foreign correspondents filed a lawsuit to block it.
