The power of calm

Staying centred to teach

In today's fast-paced world, where distractions abound and stress levels are on the rise, the practice of mindfulness has become increasingly important. As an educator, I firmly believe that integrating mindfulness into the education system can have a profound impact on students' well-being and academic success. By incorporating mindfulness techniques into the classroom, we can foster a positive learning environment and equip students with essential skills to navigate the challenges they may face.

First and foremost, practicing mindfulness cultivates self-awareness. By encouraging students to pay attention to their thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations in the present moment, they develop a deeper understanding of themselves. This self-awareness allows students to identify and manage their emotions effectively, leading to improved emotional intelligence. When students are aware of their feelings and reactions, they can respond to challenges in a more thoughtful and constructive manner. This heightened self-awareness also enhances their ability to empathize with others, fostering a more inclusive and compassionate classroom environment.

Furthermore, mindfulness promotes focus and concentration, two critical skills for academic success. In a world filled with constant distractions, students often struggle to maintain their attention on the task at hand. However, by practicing mindfulness, they can train their minds to stay focused on the present moment. By teaching students techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or body scan exercises, they learn to quiet their minds and concentrate on the present. This increased ability to focus allows students to engage more fully in their studies, leading to improved learning outcomes and overall academic performance.

In addition to self-awareness and improved focus, mindfulness also helps reduce stress and anxiety. The pressures of academic expectations and social dynamics can take a toll on students' mental health. However, by incorporating mindfulness practices into their daily routines, students can learn to manage stress and anxiety more effectively. Mindfulness teaches students to observe their thoughts without judgment and to develop a more balanced perspective on challenging situations. This shift in mindset empowers students to approach stressors with greater resilience and adaptability, ultimately promoting their overall well-being.

Moreover, mindfulness supports the development of important life skills such as self-regulation and problem-solving. Through regular mindfulness practice, students learn to recognize their emotions and regulate their responses. They become more attuned to their own needs and are better equipped to make informed decisions. By encouraging students to approach problems with a calm and focused mindset, mindfulness enables them to think more creatively and find effective solutions. These skills are not only valuable for their academic pursuits but also essential for their future personal and professional lives.

Integrating mindfulness into education also fosters a sense of community and positive relationships among students. By practicing mindfulness together, students learn to listen attentively to one another, respect diverse perspectives, and cultivate a sense of empathy. These qualities are fundamental for building strong relationships and promoting a harmonious classroom environment. As an educator, I have witnessed firsthand how mindfulness activities encourage students to harness and regulate their emotions.

Now, I would like to take a moment to share an activity with you that can be adapted to all ages:

1. Begin by inviting the students to find a comfortable sitting position, either on the floor or in their chairs. Encourage them to sit up straight and close their eyes if they feel comfortable doing so.

2. Guide the students to take a few deep breaths, inhaling slowly through their noses, and exhaling gently through their mouths. Encourage them to let go of any tension or distractions they may be feeling, and to focus their attention on the present moment.

3. Next, instruct the students to open their eyes and look around the classroom. Explain that you will be doing a mindfulness activity focusing on colors.Direct the students to choose a color in the room that catches their attention. It can be any colour they see on objects, furniture, walls, or even on their classmates' clothes.

4. Ask the students to focus their attention solely on that chosen color. Encourage them to observe it without any judgment or evaluation, simply noticing its presence.

Now, guide the students to explore the colour more deeply. Have them pay attention to the shade, intensity, and variations of the color they have chosen. Encourage them to notice any patterns, textures, or shapes associated with the color.

5. As the students continue to observe their chosen colour, invite them to take a few more slow, deep breaths, inhaling and exhaling calmly. Encourage them to allow any thoughts or distractions to pass through their minds, returning their attention to the color each time.

Finish with five deep inhalation breaths and three outward breaths.

This activity is useful to complete after assessments, mid brain breaks or if a child is feeling anxious.
