Type 1 Diabetes This type usually develops in childhood or early adulthood. It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. People with type 1 diabetes require insulin injections or the use of an insulin pump to manage their blood sugar levels.
Type 2 Diabetes This type is more common and often develops later in life, although it can occur at any age. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn't produce enough insulin to regulate blood sugar properly. It is often associated with lifestyle factors such as poor diet, lack of physical activity, and obesity. Type 2 diabetes can sometimes be managed with lifestyle changes, such as adopting a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and losing weight. In some cases, medication or insulin therapy may be necessary. This was me when I went for a random medical at 25 years of age , So living with this I no all to well the difficulties that we all face on a daily basis .
Employers may need to make accommodations to help employees with diabetes manage their condition. For example, allowing for flexible work schedules so employees can attend medical appointments or taking breaks to check blood sugar levels or administer insulin. It is illegal for an employer to discriminate against an employee because of their diabetes. This includes not hiring someone because of their condition or firing someone because of their diabetes. Employers can help prevent diabetes in the workplace by providing education and resources on healthy lifestyle choices, such as regular exercise and healthy eating habits.
Blood Sugar Monitoring Regularly monitor your blood sugar levels using a blood glucose meter. This will help you understand how your body responds to different foods, activities, and medications. Work with your healthcare team to set target ranges and determine when and how often to test.
Healthy Eating Develop a balanced meal plan in consultation with a registered dietitian or healthcare provider. Focus on consuming a variety of nutrient-dense foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Limit the intake of sugary foods, processed snacks, and beverages with added sugars.
Regular Physical Activity Engage in regular physical activity as advised by your healthcare professional. Exercise can help improve insulin sensitivity, regulate blood sugar levels, manage weight, and enhance overall well-being. Consult your doctor before starting any new exercise program.
