How to Make Your Bespoke Suit Last Longer
Taking Care of Your Bespoke Suit.
Finally, a high-quality Bespoke Suit has been purchased, and you want to make sure it lasts as long as possible.
Here are some tips.
CLEANING
Only clean your suit when it is actually unclean or odorous, such as after you've sweat through it or spilled something on it.
A large number of suits are dry-clean-only, and you should never dry-clean a garment unnecessarily. Dry cleaning is a chemical wash that, if done too frequently, can wear down The Fabric. Imagine doing so by dipping the clothing in a substance that "scrapes away" the fabric's very top layer. The fibers eventually start to degrade.
Just get it professionally pressed if your suit only needs to be "refreshed." Compared to dry cleaning, this option is more affordable, and in most circumstances, the heat and steam will effectively remove most germs.
Several of my suits are a few years old, and I've never had them dry-cleaned.
IRONING/STEAMING
Steaming your suit before or after each wear is a smart idea. This restores it to its original state and "hangs." Simply hanging it in the bathroom while you take a hot shower can accomplish this (pro tip).
Use a pressing cloth (a piece of fabric, typically cotton, placed between the hot iron's metal and the suit's fabric) if you plan to iron your suit by yourself. You run the danger of "scorching" the fabric (making it glossy) if you hit it directly with an iron that is too hot. This effect is very impossible to undo.
STORING
Always hang up your suit as soon as you take it off.
Don't put it in the laundry basket. Don't throw it to the floor. Never fling it over a chair. A hanger with a pant bar and a complete shoulder is the right way to hang it. This will enable it to take on its original shape, dry off any moisture, and eventually lengthen its lifespan.
If you're storing it for an extended period of time (seasonally), place it in a garment bag (or plastic cover) with a cedar hanger to ward off moths.
GIVE IT A BREAK
Avoid donning a suit on multiple days in a row.
It's a good idea to let the clothing completely dry out and catch its breath, just like you would with a pair of shoes.
For best results, even a workhorse needs a break.
PACKING/TRAVELING

Better still, invest in a quality suit bag.
ALTERING
Consider having the suit changed if your weight or form changes and it prevents the garment from fitting as well as it should.
Not only does well-fitting clothing feel and look nice, but it also lasts longer.
With movement, an item of improperly fitting clothing might "pull" awkwardly on the fabric, putting strain on it. Tears may result from strain.
FIXING TEARS
No worry if it tears along a seam; just have your neighborhood tailor or seamstress patch it back together.
If a seam comes off of it, you can have problems. Although there are some "re-weavers" of fabric who occasionally perform miracles and are worthwhile contacting, the best-case situation is that you will still have a scar where the tear once was in the cloth.
