The current climate in education is very concerning for teachers and students. High anxiety and stress levels were already alarming and even worse before the pandemic. Today’s students face various challenges contributing to their anxiety, such as poverty, isolation, bullying, and digital distraction. On the other hand, teachers are reportedly experiencing increasing stress levels as well.

The increasing number of teachers leaving the profession due to burnout and stress is a significant concern for policymakers. As a result, many states analyzed the data from last year’s testing sequence to see how students performed. They also realize that many students are struggling with mental health issues.

One of the most effective ways to promote emotional and social learning in schools is by incorporating a consistent practice of mindfulness into your curriculum. This practice can help students develop a positive mindset and improve their academic performance. Besides improving their academic performance, the method can also help students build confidence.

Lowered Stress and Anxiety

Since its inception, mindfulness has been regarded as a proven tool for managing anxiety and stress. External and internal pressures trigger both conditions. For instance, students might feel anxious about their future well-being if they have a mental health condition.

It could be caused by parental pressure, workload, or peer pressure. Practicing mindfulness can help you acknowledge and manage external stress without getting anxious or stressed about the past. In a study, researchers discovered that students who practiced mindfulness exercises during exams were more likely to reduce their anxiety and stress levels.

Gaining Emotional and Social Intelligence

Some students develop more emotional understanding and empathy earlier than others. One of the most effective ways to improve a student’s emotional intelligence is mindfulness and regular practice. It can help them better understand their emotions and the people around them. In addition to handling challenges better, practicing mindfulness can help them improve their empathy toward others.

Improved Memory

According to studies, practicing mindfulness can improve memory. One of the most common reasons people improve their memory is by paying attention to the present. During lessons, they can also train their awareness to stay focused on the present and other mindful practices.

Active listening to your professor’s lecture can make remembering what he said in the last class easier. Also, having the presence of mind to write down each word can help keep track of all your studies.

People who pay attention to the information they are reading or listening to could retain more new information than those who aren’t. Doing so can help improve one’s academic performance.
