"Damsel" Movie Breakdown: From Fairy Tale Trope to Twisted Reality

Finally, a man for Millie Bobby Brown who isn't Drake. I just hope he's kind. Six and a half hours after the fact, this marriage won't stand the test of time. "Damsel" is Netflix's latest fantasy epic that asks, what would happen if a damsel tried to save herself, making for a lot of sad nights. In this video, we'll be investigating the film, its consummation, and a lot of little subtleties you missed en route. In any case, before we start, try to hit that like and buy in button, and let me in on your opinion on the film beneath.

Introduction to "Damsel"

"Damsel" follows Lady Elod Bayford, a woman who can chop wood almost as good as Captain America. The name El actually means "foreign riches," which is interesting since she'll essentially be sold for foreign riches. Her father, Lord Bayford, rules an unnamed land stricken by something called "the freeze," a frozen scourge resulting in widespread famine. Just look at how all these trees have been cut down to warm their fires.Fortunately, there's an answer.

The Proposal from the Queen of Ora

This is a Red Priestess from the kingdom of Ora, a name which means "golden" in Latin, fitting for the richest kingdom around. Gold can be seen throughout their land, such as the royal carriage and El's wedding dress. Speaking of which, the Red Priestess has come to deliver a message about marriage. The Queen of Ora, portrayed by Robin Wright, who you may remember played another famous royal in "The Princess Bride," has extended an offer for Elod to wed her son, Prince Henry. This is a win-win; her son gets a bride, and the Bayfords get to enjoy Ora's vast wealth, essentially saving their poor, famished people. As Elod will later tell her husband-to-be, "My happiness is a small price to pay for the future of my people."

The Journey to Ora and Suspicious Events

The family, along with Elod's sister Floria and stepmother Lady Bayford, embark to the island kingdom of Ora. Upon first landing, it's clear that this place is the complete opposite from their frozen hellhole. It's warm, filled with bountiful crops, and a castle as opulent as it is large. But there's this ominous bit of foreshadowing as they approach the harbor, as giant dragon flame statues greet them, a nod to the dragon living within the bowels of the nearby mountain. No time is wasted before the queen and Lord Bayford wander off to discuss the details of the marriage, leaving Henry and Elod to get to know each other before their marriage. And, believe it or not, they kind of dig each other. Both of them have the same dream of one day exploring the world, they're both in the same position of being in an arranged marriage, and they both have stunning hair.

Weird Events Unfold

However, it isn't long before some particularly weird events unfold. When her father returns from his meeting, he seems distraught over something. Lady Bayford gets a cold welcome from the queen, who can't even remember the name of the woman her son is marrying. "I wish all the best for Henry and Eloise," the queen states. In fact, it's her stepmother who advises Elod to call off the marriage, sensing something isn't right. But Lord Bayford won't have it. Also, I thought it was interesting that in most fairy tales, the stepmother is evil, but here she's one of the only characters to do what is right.

The Secret Ceremony and Betrayal

With a ceremony that's over quicker than my first marriage, Elody and Henry are wed, only to be taken to a second secret ceremony, which is part of an ancient Ora custom. Now, El isn't suspicious of this. The steps are strewn with rose petals, and everyone is wearing these totally not creepy masks. There, she is greeted by the queen, who you'll notice is wearing the same type of red Priestess outfit we saw the messenger wearing at the beginning. It seems whatever is going on within this mountain is tied to their religious beliefs. Elody goes along with it. After all, she is their new princess.

Betrayal and Sacrifice

But where things get really weird is this blood pact. Both her and Henry's hands are cut and wrapped together, and as we'll soon find out, there's a very specific reason for this. With the ceremony complete, Henry, being the prince charming that he is, picks up Elody and throws her over the edge. Hello up there. I seem to have fallen down a cliff. I'm still alive, but I'm very badly injured. But why would a prince throw his new wife into a death hole? It all has to do with an ancient pact the former king of Ora made with a dragon.

The Story of the Dragon

According to the queen, her people arrived on the island centuries ago, only to find it inhabited by a vicious dragon. With the town under siege by endless attacks, the king and a band of his brave warriors ventured into the dragon's lair to kill the beast for good. But what they found were the dragon's three babies, which he consequently slays. Now, if you're the mama dragon, of course, you're going to be pissed. She makes quick work of his warriors, with the king vowing to do anything if she allows him to live. And she wants him to suffer.

Conclusion

Elod's victory over misfortune and her recently discovered organization act as a demonstration of the strength of the human soul. "Lady" exhorts us that even in very dark times, mental courage and compassion can light the way forward.

All in all, "Lady" offers a dazzling mix of imagination and ethical quality, welcoming watchers to reexamine the genuine importance of valor and penance.
