Good health is our duty to ourselves, as it allows us to avoid the suffering and pain associated with sickness. Maharshi Patanjali advises in his Yoga Sutra, "Hayam dukkamanagatam" (pain which is yet to come could be avoided). This highlights the importance of living mindfully to prevent future suffering. Now, you might wonder how to incorporate this into your life. Each day, you have numerous choices regarding how you live. It is important to consider factors such as your age, limitations, and interactions with others. Here are seven tips to help you stay fit, healthy, and content: 1. Fruit Day: If you are a normal, healthy individual, consider observing a fruit day once a month. On this day, consume only fruits to give your digestive system a rest and enhance your metabolism. Depending on the season, there are various fruits available that are easily digestible and provide energy and alertness. 2. Stay Hydrated: Water is an essential element as our bodies consist of around 60 percent water. Experts always emphasize the importance of drinking sufficient water daily. To make this habit more interesting, try drinking warm water with a pinch of salt and lemon twice a day. This natural detoxification will benefit your system. 3. Practice Yoga: To maintain fitness and health, it is crucial to be active and engage our muscular and skeletal systems. Incorporate a daily yoga practice that includes asanas (poses) that stretch your spine in six different ways: upward, sidewall bending, forward and backward bending, twisting, and inwards. These asanas strengthen your spinal muscles and improve posture. 4. Equal Breathing: Twice a day, sit or stand with relaxed shoulders and practice equal breathing. Inhale for three counts and exhale for three counts. Repeat this breathing rhythm for four rounds. Equal breathing has the power to significantly change your emotional state by inducing calmness within seconds. 5. Mindful Breathing: Take a 10-minute break from the constant chatter of your mind each day. Find a comfortable and quiet place, preferably in nature, and close your eyes. Straighten your spine, relax your shoulders, and passively observe your breathing. Avoid exaggerating your breathing pattern. Gradually, you will notice your breathing becoming rhythmic, leading to a relaxed mind. 6. Engage in Creative Activities: Allocate 10 minutes in your daily schedule to tend to potted plants, decorate your windows, or try new recipes. These activities will rejuvenate your being and inspire more creative ways to express yourself. 7. Volunteer: Once a week, engage in selfless voluntary activities, such as helping the elderly, cooking for someone who is sick, or teaching underprivileged children. There are plenty of opportunities around you. This will cultivate empathy for others and contribute to personal growth. By following these seven ways, you will discover a better and fitter version of yourself. The time dedicated to these activities will enrich your life in numerous ways.
