How to Study When You Don't Feel Like It

A Four-Step Guide to Effective Studying

By Suleiman Musa OkpokuPublished 2 days ago 5 min read

I have thought of another article connected with the topic, as you most likely are aware. Studying is an exhausting task, and most of the time, you don't want to do it. So in this article, I will let you know how to study when you don't want to study.

First, let's do a self-check. Why do you rank lower in tests? Why can't you get enough marks to rank first? Have you ever pondered this? The answer to this issue is straightforward: if you want to top any test, you need to start concentrating. Perhaps the reason for your poor performance is that you did not concentrate well. Why were you not able to concentrate? There are two possibilities: first, you might not have sufficient time to study, or you might have the time but lack the inspiration to study. You may have the time but lack the desire to study, or you may have the time and desire to concentrate but forget everything after a dedicated study period.

I have thought of another article connected with the topic, as you most likely are aware. Studying is an exhausting task, and most of the time, you don't want to do it. So in this article, I will let you know how to study when you don't want to study.

No matter your level of motivation or the presence of distractions, I guarantee that by the end of this video, you will be able to study whenever you want to. I will transform you into a beast if you stay with me till the end.

Switch Inspiration

Without wasting more time, let's start with reverse inspiration by Jeff Hayden. Before moving on to the real techniques, you should understand the concept of reverse inspiration. People often think that inspiration leads to action. However, this isn't entirely true. According to Jeff Hayden's book, "Motivation is a Myth," if you wait for inspiration, it will lead to action. For successful people, it's the reverse psychology that makes them better: action leads to inspiration. For example, imagine a successful person doing something useful every day. Once he completes his work, he becomes satisfied. Why does completing work make him happy? Because he has wired his brain to give him motivation after completing an action. Completing a task releases dopamine in his brain, which motivates him to work even harder.

Get a Decent Clarity

With this idea in mind, here is a four-step rule to solve your problem of how to concentrate even when you're not in the mood to concentrate.

Step One: Get a Decent Clarity

We usually don't start studying because we don't know what to study, when to study, or how long to study. So, the first step is to gain clarity on these issues. You can make a plan like this: "I'm going to tackle 40 questions in 2 hours from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. after my lunch." From today forward, since you now know where to start, what to study, and best of all, when to do it, you have also connected studying to an existing daily habit of eating lunch. This method is known as habit stacking. It works by connecting a new habit to an existing one. This will work like a daily reminder and help you develop a new habit, which is a well-coordinated action of study.

Step Two: How to Start Studying

Let's move on to the second step, which is how to start studying. I'm sure you've missed something, so go back and review the last 30 seconds. Once you have clarity on things and have made a plan, go ahead and use the reverse course of action instead of motivation. It's not as simple as I just said, and I fully acknowledge it. However, there are techniques to help you. You should be aware of the five-minute rule, which states that if you want to study for 2 or 3 hours, start with 5 minutes. You need to tell yourself to sit down in front of your books and study for 5 minutes. This will help you get past any initial resistance, as you'll find that continuing to study is quite easy.

Let's recap: you devised a game plan to concentrate in the first place. You then started studying, and now the third stage is to continue studying until you finish and reach what are referred to as motivation circles. Let me explain what motivation circles are.

Step Three: How to Study for Long Periods

Moving on to the next step, which is how to study for a longer period. It is hard to study for 2 or 3 hours at once, which is why we have techniques like the Pomodoro Technique and ultradian rhythms. The Pomodoro Technique involves studying for 25 minutes and taking a break for 5 minutes. The ultradian rhythm is to study for 90 minutes and take a break for 20 minutes. These methods can actually help you study longer. I've also covered a core technique in my previous video, so I'll just put it on the end screen so you can watch it after this one.

So, to recap the three stages: first, you made a study plan; then you started studying; and finally, the third step is to continue studying.

Step Four: Motivation Circles and Rewards

Stage four is to reward yourself for all the hard work you've been doing. Although this might sound like the silliest of all the tips we've covered in this video, it's actually one of the most important ones because rewards encourage you to study harder the next time you pick up your book. By doing this, you'll be able to close the motivation circle. You can do this by listening to a song, taking a coffee break, or having a snack. It's necessary to plan to chill because it ignites your reward system and makes you perform better. It will give you the dopamine you need to work even harder to achieve your goals.

This is reverse inspiration: to make a game plan and get motivation out of it to study when you are not motivated to study. That's what I meant when I said that the rule for successful people is that action comes first and motivation comes second.

Conclusion

Having said that, I truly hope you find this video helpful. People work because they need to, not because they are motivated to. If you sum up everything I have said in this video, it will help you get started with your studies. You ultimately need to push yourself to take on challenging tasks because if you don't, who will make a difference in your life? You need to establish your own study habits since you are no longer a child.
