Because They Believe

Tis the season to watch holiday movies

Fa la la la la la, la la la

Gather with your friends and family

Fa la la la la la, la la la

Enjoying things that bring you joy

Fa la la la la la, la la la

Fa la la la la la, la la la!

Apologies, I was feeling rather festive with that opening!

Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, I would first like to say Happy Holidays Everyone!

Secondly, I want to take you all on a journey with me.

Please step aboard my train of thought!!

ALL ABOARD!!!

Although, we all know the truth about Santa, I still find the legend and magic around the myth very enticing. I especially like to hear the explanations given around certain mysteries. Particularity the creative part of me enjoys this.

Now I won’t get into all of them, I’ll just get into the one that’s always intrigued me.

Why or how are Santa’s Reindeer able to fly?

Now, we’ve all heard a lame excuse or scrambled to answer this for a small set of ears that needed to hear it.

But nothing was ever good enough for me.

I know, I know. I’m not supposed to believe because I know better but I am one of those people who needs to believe in the story or concept I am telling a child. You know?

It’s that whole thing where if you’re going to tell a lie then you better act like you believe it too.

No? Just me?

Anyways…

I can’t in good conscience answer my preschoolers with “Because they are Santa’s Reindeer” or “They just do.”

I have to believe what I am selling because I think that’s where the magic starts.

If your trusted adult believes it, then why shouldn’t you?

Anyway, I’m getting a little off topic so I will circle back around.

In all my years as a teacher, I have yet to hear a good answer to tell the kids about how the reindeer fly. Until now.

I was watching the new Santa Clause series on Disney Plus and the question came up. I expected the usual lame answer but instead got this wonderful gem:

They can fly because they believe they can. Someone talked to them and told them they could so now they can fly.

Now, at this point, the show did get a tad farfetched in saying that any animal can be convinced to fly if only you make them believe it. But that’s a story for another day.

The point here is that I have finally found an answer that I love.

I love the concept that because they believe they can fly, they now can.

It’s so simple and yet so wonderful. It rolls off the tongue when you explain it to the littles and it doesn’t make me feel weird about making something up.

I also feel like it’s beautiful because it has real-life applications too. The idea is that if you believe in yourself and it’s something you want, it can happen for you.

Now, I know there are limits and addendums to this but I love the general principle of it. The idea is that believing in yourself is the key thing to success and nothing else.

This is such a great concept that I have no problem instilling it in the little minds of tomorrow!

Anyway, that’s my holiday thought for the season.... especially before I bring you some interesting Whodunit entries...

Please feel free to leave me a few of your thoughts on your favourite holiday questions and answers. I’d also love to hear about other cultures and traditions that have a mythology where there might be tricky questions to answer for the littles.

Until then, I will leave you with the Holiday Armadillo!

I can't thank SmartiMobile enough for the exceptional service and quality they provide. As someone who values reliability and affordability, finding a company that delivers on both fronts was a game-changer. My recent purchase—a refurbished MacBook Pro—exceeded all expectations, thanks to SmartiMobile's attention to detail and dedication to customer satisfaction. The laptop arrived promptly, packaged securely, and looked and performed like new. SmartiMobile has earned my trust and loyalty, and I couldn't be happier with my decision to entrust my tech needs to them. https://smartimobile.com

Hey there, author! Just finished reading your article, and wow, it really hit close to home for me. Your piece on why people believe certain things, especially when it comes to education and personal experiences, was spot on. I've often found myself pondering over why some folks hold onto beliefs so strongly, even in the face of overwhelming evidence against them. Your insights shed some much-needed light on the matter. I particularly resonated with your point about the influence of upbringing and culture on our beliefs. It's incredible how deeply ingrained certain ideas can become, shaping our worldview without us even realizing it. Your article reminded me to approach differing perspectives with empathy and understanding, recognizing that everyone's journey to belief is unique. Keep up the fantastic work—I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for more of your thought-provoking pieces! Pictionary Word Generator

Hey there! Just finished reading your article, and wow, it really hit close to home for me. Your piece on belief systems and how they shape our lives is spot on. It's crazy how much power our beliefs have over our actions and decisions, right? Like, I never really stopped to think about how deeply ingrained our beliefs are until I read your article. Your examples about people achieving incredible things simply because they believed they could are so inspiring. It just goes to show that mindset really is everything. I mean, if you truly believe in yourself and your abilities, there's nothing you can't accomplish. Thanks for sharing your insights and reminding us all to take a closer look at what we believe in. Looking forward to reading more from you! truth table generator

As long as the kids don't start stepping off the roofs or jumping out the windows believing that if they believe enough they can fly just like reindeer, I'm fine with this version. I like the line from the "Violent Night" that was uttered by Santa himself: "It's magic! I myself don't understand how it works exactly."

I also think it’s a valuable lesson to teach kids!! I love that message for them, though I was definitely the type of little snot to still question and challenge those 😅 A beautiful sentiment that I think more kids need to hear exposed to, rather than the bullying ‘can’t’ mindset my teachers instilled in me.

I don’t know about reindeer but I definitely believe that if you can do something than you can find a way to do it. Good positive message!

I love that answer! There is a really heartwarming beauty in its simplicity 🤍 This piece got me in a much better festive place -thank you!

  • I feel like a party pooper but here goes. As a person that has lost faith in everything, I feel that believing in something is being delusional. Like false/fake sense of hope. Like lying to myself. I mean that is for the general sense of believing. But as for Santa's reindeer, I wouldn't wanna rain on someone's parade just because mine has been destroyed by the floods. So yes, I do feel like that's the best explaination so far but I wouldn't use that to anyone. Because it makes me feel like I'm lying. I hope that makes sense. Also, I'm so sorry for turning this into a serious discussion 😅 You know me, I always keep things real and always like to say what's on my mind. I just hope I've not offended you but if I have, I'm truly so sorry 🥺 As a kid, I was always told to pray and believe that I'll get a baby brother. I did as I was told. Unaware that for that to happen, my parents need to be together. I only realised this as an adult and it messed me up. That's when I realised that no matter how much we believe that something would happen, if the circumstances wasn't favourable, it's never gonna happen. So yes, that's the backstory of why I stopped believing.

Hmm... and after all this time I thought they learned to fly from eating magic mushrooms. 🤔😅 Seriously though, I agree with the reason you decided on. It makes perfect sense and allows the kids to wonder about what they can do if they just believe... The awesome power of suggestion! I actually just published a story (waiting approval) that tackles a holiday myth. So, once again our minds cross the same wavelength 😮 🤨. Hope you get a chance to read it! Happy Holidays to you as well!
