The Matterhorn - a magnet for guests as well as locals. Last but not least, it owes its fame to the countless pictures that go around the world. But where are the perfect photo points?

By Fabienne Fux-Schaller – Zermatt Tourism

The Matterhorn casts a spell over everyone and neither guests nor locals can escape it. Due to the fact that it rises 4,478 m into the sky and stands there alone, it draws attention to itself, either intentionally or unintentionally. Rarely can someone resist and not take out the camera or at least their smartphone and take a picture.

“Although I grew up in Zermatt and see the Matterhorn (or z'Hore in dialect) every day, it still fascinates me again and again.”

I am very proud to have a huge collection of pictures from and with the Matterhorn. It shows itself in so many different facets: freshly snowed in, as a cloud-spouting mountain, with storm clouds passing by, sunrises or the last rays of sun shining from Zmutt on the Matterhorn and and and...

Often it doesn't need anything unusual other than looking towards the Matterhorn at the right time, positioning your camera or smartphone. But in your amazement, don't forget to press the shutter button and keep it relatively still so that the picture isn't blurry afterwards.

But if you don't want to leave it to chance, you will find 5 selected photo points below, from which the perfect Matterhorn photo is almost certain to be taken.

The inconspicuous photo point - church square

Accessibility: Coming from the train station or via the church bridge to the church square.

What makes this photo point special: Coming from the train station, you tend to pay less attention to the Matterhorn. There are so many other things to see that distract you: people walking by, restaurants, shop windows and much more. Arrived on the church square, the opportunity for a perfect Matterhorn picture should be used. All you have to do is climb the first few steps at the church and look south. The old wooden houses that stand in the foreground make it perfect . They give the picture a certain charm.

Tip: Right next to the town hall, a huge bronze alphorn can be admired and the terrace invites you to linger.

What makes this photo point special: Coming from the hiking trail as well as from the piste, the north face of the Matterhorn rises majestically. It's worth stopping at the bench at the edge of the path/piste and taking in the whole thing. Because the north face – steep and rough – is impressive to look at . It gives you a completely different perspective of the Matterhorn.

Tip: Ask a passing hiker or skier if they have time to take a picture of you, the bench and the north face.

Matterhorn with Gädis above Zermatt

Accessibility: Walk to Zen Stecken. Continue to follow the hiking trail in the direction of Furri. After about 10 minutes you will reach a bench with a junction, turn right there and follow the signs for the Vita Parcours.

What makes this photo point special: Here the combination of old barns, nature with the tall larches and the Matterhorn in the background is special. You are not too far from the village and yet you are in the middle of nature.

By the way, also a tip for the winter . If you want to loosen up the whole thing, hold a few summer flowers in front of the picture for the perfect picture.

Tip: Follow the hiking trail to Zmutt and always keep the Matterhorn in view. Duration: approx. 1 hour 20 minutes

Stellisee with Matterhorn reflection

Accessibility: ride on the underground funicular to Sunnegga (2,288 m). We continue with the gondolas to Blauherd (2,571 m). From here follow the hiking trail for 20 minutes to Stellisee .

What makes this photo point special: On the one hand , in ideal weather conditions, the Matterhorn is reflected in the lake - which is very impressive. On the other hand, the end of the lake looks like an abyss and the Matterhorn follows directly behind it with it's Zermatt chalet rental .

Tip: Overnight stay in the Fluhalp Hütte , which is very close by. The following morning it is worth getting up early to experience the sunrise at Stellisee. There are also other lakes around Zermatt in which the Matterhorn is reflected, such as the Riffelsee, Grindjisee, Leisee

How to get there : Walk from the station square in the direction of the village entrance, where a lift takes you to the Air Zermatt helibase. Then register and off you go.

What makes this photo point special: This variant is probably a bit more expensive but definitely worth it and unique. The reward is a breathtaking mountain panorama from a bird's eye view - of course with a focus on the Matterhorn. You can only get that close to the Matterhorn as an alpinist.

Tip: If possible, plan the sightseeing flight for the later afternoon so that the sunset can be experienced live.
