Twilight should have died faster than it grew.

Twilight was huge when it came out, with the first movie hitting the big screen in 2008 and the book hitting the shelves in 2005.

The real question is why? You had other things happening all at the same time: Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings. Every other vampire movie and book hitting the shelves and the big screen. How did Twilight make it in?

With Bella Swan having the typical home situation: divorced parents. One parent remarried and followed the new partner around, while the other parent kept the house and never really moved on. Eventually, the teen was old enough to decide which parent they wanted to live with.

Being the average, shy, awkward teen girl starting a new school in the middle of the school year. By this time of year, everyone is already in their cliques and friend groups. Where does the new girl fit in? With someone as awkward and shy as Bella Swan? Being the gossip of the school and keeping to themselves.

I get it's a fictional story, the story coming from a dream the author had and went off on that. So, how does it even relate to the average teen girl? Outside what I've already mentioned, there really isn't much to relate to. In my experience, these are the kind of people who don't make friends as quickly as the character does in the story.

Shortly after arriving, somehow, against all odds, she makes friends and lands herself a boyfriend. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it seems odd given the timeline.

So, how is this story overrated to me? Easy. Finding out that your boyfriend is a vampire- who happens to be a vegetarian- and being something and someone who he's not. The monster/ narcissist pretending to be the good guy. Tells you to stay away from him because he isn't good but won't actually leave you alone. Spends his time getting to know you. You end up falling for him, just for him to leave you. Hear the typical "it's not you, it's me line."

Spend months in a depression for him to turn things back to him, and all of a sudden he has you back to being obsessed over him.

There really isn't anything original or unique about Twilight at all. At least with Harry Potter, you have a boy who had a very bad past who makes friends. With these new friends, they help him get through it and have character development over time. In The Lord of the Rings, you have someone who will follow you to the end of the world. No matter what happens, they will be at your side. In good times and in the bad.

What value does Twilight even hold? Besides narcissism, monsters and friends who aren't even your friends? Is it, it's fine as long as you are pretty and have money? The ability to move and restart when shit isn't going your way and then move back to try to regain control? Then sure, in that aspect Twilight is relatable.

The problem is that many teens, myself included, have fallen for this so-called love story. Why? Again, a very well-known, powerful, good-looking, mysterious, wealthy family who lives on the outskirts of town. They keep to themselves but somehow, in their own way, run the town.

There's no originality to this storyline. No one character has any development. Good or bad. You have the girl with an absent parent; the other parent barely parents. Two-faced friends; they don't actually care and always think the worst of you. A boyfriend who is a monster, and his family really isn't any better. A best friend who really isn't a best friend. All he wants is to bone, and when he can't have you, he ends up going after your child- I get in this particular story it can't be helped.

So, what is the big deal over Twilight? As a teen, I was all over Team Edward. As an adult, I'm all over team what the fuck is happening and where is this girl's support team? Why is the solution to this girl's problems to pawn her off to the other parent when they can't handle her? Not that Bella is a bad child, but still.

I get it; in the time Twilight came out, this was something to read/watch in between the other big hits. I found Twilight to be a filler while I waited for the next Harry Potter or the next Vampire Diaries.

The whole Twilight vampires are a different breed; they never sleep, nor do they necessarily die. It seems the only way to rip their head off and burn them. How boring, to be honest. The biggest plot hole in this universe is the fact that they are sexually active. Yet it's known that fluids don't flow through their body. This does make sense since they are technically dead. So, it would be a little hard to get hard. Let alone be able to reproduce a love child with a human.

To sum it all up, even though yes, it is a fictional story, there is nothing to relate to in this universe. Besides maybe having friends who hate you behind your back, narcissism, absent parents and a best friend getting pissed when you don't love them the same way back.
