Her mother has endured two tragedies

Deavon Jacobs was born on July 29, 1991, and Keeshae Jacobs was born on August 6, 1995. Their mother, Toni Jacobs, worked a variety of customer service jobs to help support her family and she made enough to keep their living situation stable and ideal. There was room for leisure too, as Toni regularly took Deavon and Keeshae to their favorite amusement park–King’s Dominion in Doswell, Virginia. Toni wanted her extended family to have a presence in the lives of her children as well. Because of this, the three would regularly visit their relatives on the coast.

The future looked bright, but no one knew the horrible circumstances that awaited Keeshae, Deavon, and Toni in the future. The family was so happy together, it was hard to believe that everything would shatter in the span of a few years.

In 2016, Deavon was arrested and sent to jail. The news devastated Keeshae. She and Toni were forced to spend the next few months without Deavon.

Eventually, the day of Deavon’s release finally arrived and Keeshae was ecstatic to be able to embrace her brother again. According to Toni, Deavon was determined to never return to jail for one reason; he didn’t want to hurt his little sister again.

On September 26, 2016, Toni clocked into her dispatching job. When it was time for her lunch break, she chatted on the phone with both Deavon and Keeshae; as was routine. Later that night, she again spoke with Keeshae over the phone. Keeshae informed her that she would be spending the night at a friend’s house. Keeshae texted her later and said she arrived at the house and would be home on the 27th.

Toni reached out to her daughter when she failed to return home, but every call went straight to voicemail. Worried, she called Deavon to ask if he had heard from Keeshae since the previous night. Deavon had not heard from his little sister.

After her shift ended at 5 p.m, Toni called Keeshae’s friends; but none of them knew where her daughter was. At 1 a.m, Toni, unable to sleep, got out of bed and hopped in her car to search for Keeshae herself. She stopped by several houses of Keeshae’s friends–including the house she claimed to visit the night of her disappearance–but no one had seen her.

In the early hours of September 28th, Toni drove to the police station to report her daughter missing. Her worries were dismissed by police, who assumed Keeshae, a legal adult, likely wanted some space. Toni was able to file a police report, but not a missing person’s report.

On October 2, five days after Keeshae’s disappearance, Toni and Deavon rallied up family, friends, and other community members to pass out fliers around Chimbaraza Park. Among the volunteers were the same group of friends Keeshae made plans to meet with the night of her disappearance. Midday through they approached Toni with disturbing information. To her horror, they admitted they lied to her about Keeshae’s whereabouts and she actually made it to the house.

Enraged, Toni demanded to know what other information they knew about her daughter’s whereabouts. They claimed Keeshae asked them to drive her to a house about 10 minutes away so she could meet with a mutual female friend (when interviewed, the friend denied ever making plans with Keeshae that night).

Toni was able to track down the exact house and paid a visit herself. A man answered the door and when asked about Keeshae, confirmed she had visited the house on the 26th. However, she only stayed for a few minutes before someone else picked her up.

At that point, Keeshae had been missing long enough for the police to begin an investigation. Investigators quickly discovered Keeshae’s bank and social media accounts had been inactive since the day she disappeared. The house where she was dropped off was searched, but there were no signs of Keeshae. However, when Toni visited the house a second time, she discovered that the man did not live there anymore, and the property had a basement that police failed to examine.

Toni contacted the police again, who searched the basement. Like before, there were no signs of Keeshae. Then, another tragedy would strike.

On January 8, 2017, Deavon Jacobs was shot and killed by James D. Henshaw during an argument. Police quickly announced the murder had no connection to Keeshae’s disappearance.

The murder quickly became big news within the Richmond community, which rallied around Toni. Additionally, the Richmond police quickly intensified their investigation into Keeshae’s disappearance and regularly filled Toni in on any updates. In November of 2017, nearly fourteen months after Keeshae’s disappearance, the RPD announced they suspected foul play in Keeshae’s case.

Despite all this progress, an update on Keeshae’s case would not come until 2018 when a prison inmate claimed to have information about her case. The inmate is currently in jail for an assault against a woman. Neither his identity nor his knowledge of Keeshae’s disappearance has been released to the public.
