The deeper we get into Wentworth's final season, the less likely it seems that Joan 'The Freak' Ferguson will succeed in suppressing her psychopathic tendencies, a fact horrifyingly proven in episode 9x06, 'One Eye Open'. Elsewhere in the episode, the new alliance of Lou Kelly and Judy Bryant hatch a devious plot, while Marie uncovers a secret that could make life very difficult for our heroes in H-1, were she to choose to reveal it.

Here are the five most important moments in Wentworth 9x06, 'One Eye Open'.

1. Will finds out about Joan's memory returning

After discovering the truth about Joan's restored memories in 9x05, Vera wastes no time revealing what she has learned to Will. However, as Vera's evidence (photographs of Dr. Miller's files on Joan) was obtained illegally, they will be unable to use it against Joan in court. Their best hope is to prove Miller is giving Joan an illegal drug so they can have him fired from Wentworth, which would challenge the credibility of his testimony.

Unfortunately, this proves more difficult than expected. Joan's latest drug test, which had shown anomalies once she began taking Psuldrycin, suddenly comes up clean..

2. Lou and Judy are not quite on the same page

After new Top Dog Lou Kelly took the traitorous Judy Bryant under her protection last episode, this week’s ep saw them beginning work on their plan to escape Wentworth. Judy, who is not allowed to take calls or visitors, is forced to send Lou to meet with her contact instead. She gives her new ally a very specific set of instructions: A small amount of explosive, enough to blow a hole in the exercise yard wall just big enough for she and Lou to escape through, and will keep any casualties to a minimum.

Unfortunately, Lou doesn’t actually care about escaping so much as causing as much damage to Wentworth’s upper management as possible, and so asks Judy’s contact for almost the exact opposite of what Judy requested. A large bomb, with potential for maximum casualties. And, instead of on the outside of the exercise yard, Lou asks that the bomb be placed underneath the Staff Room during the weekly staff meeting. Lou doesn’t care about Judy’s wish to escape before her extradition. She just wants to see Wentworth crumble.

3. The Freak turns on Eve

Since the arrival of Eve ‘Nanna’ Wilder, Joan has been manipulating her as part of her vendetta against Jake. This plot comes to a head in ‘One Eye Open’, when Eve’s attempt to seduce Jake ends in embarrassment. After further needling from Joan, Eve decides that Jake has to die. She later convinces Joan that the deed is done, and brings Joan to the freezer, where she suggests she has hidden Jake’s body.

Eve attempts to turn the tables on Joan, trying to lock her in the empty freezer as revenge for her actions in Blackmoor Prison. This doesn’t end well for Eve, and in chilling scenes, The Freak returns in full force.

Eve is later discovered mentally broken and missing an eye, reminding Vera of the sad case of Jodi Spiteri. Vera confronts Miller, trying to convince him to reveal the truth about Joan’s memories, but Miller stubbornly refuses to believe that Joan is responsible.

Unfortunately, with a hint that Joan may be off her meds, it’s likely things are only going to get worse.

4. Marie finds out that Rita is a Cop

For a brief, shining moment, things appear to be looking up for Rita Connors. Her lawyer makes a breakthrough in her case against the corrupt Detective 'Jonesy' Jones, through a phone call that could link Jones to Rita and Ruby's now myteriously dead friend, Eddie, on the day of Jones's kidnapping of Ruby. This would force the police to re-investigate Rita's version of that day's events.

Unfortunately, Jonesy gets wind of this. He organises a meeting with Marie Winter, whom Rita had originally entered the prison to investigate, and reveals Rita's identity as an undercover cop, believing Marie will spill the beans to the wider Prison community, and hopefully get Rita killed. Marie confronts Rita with her knowledge, and at first, it seems like she intends to blow Rita's cover. Rita even warns Ruby to expect it.

However..

5. Marie wants to know Lou's plan

Early in the episode, Marie is unable to tell Allie why Lou chose to spare Judy, claiming Lou does not trust her enough. In the episode's final scene, Marie meets with Lou in her cell, primed to expose Rita. However, she is interrupted by Lou informing her that she will have to learn to get along with Judy, who will be moving into the cell recently vacated by Eve. Marie expresses confusion over why Lou would protect Judy after she stole Reb's money. Lou blows off the question, instead asking Marie what she had come to tell her.

For the past few episodes, Marie has expressed concern over Lou's darker tendencies. Instead of exposing Lou, she kisses her, perhaps hoping to build trust between them.

The summary for next episode has Marie teaming up with Rita to find out the truth about Lou and Judy's plan. Can the unlikely duo save Wentworth from disaster?
