Wander Franco unlikely to Return to MLB amid Investigation of relationship with minor girl

According to Dominican attorney Juan Arturo Recio, the investigation into Tampa Bay Rays All-Star shortstop Wander Franco’s alleged contact with a minor is in its early stages and might take months.

Recio said on Wednesday that if Franco does not have a lawyer who can speak for him, hiring one would be “a good idea.”
“It’s critical to understand that under our laws, there are no consensual relationships between a minor and an adult,” Recio added. “There are not any mitigating factors.”

The probe follows several social media complaints on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter, alleging that Franco was involved in an inappropriate relationship with a juvenile. On Sunday evening, the league launched its own inquiry into the posts.
If an ongoing investigation confirms the claims against Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco, he faces a lifetime ban from Major League Baseball. This was a foregone conclusion because he is also in danger of being imprisoned. Messages surfaced with allegations that Wander Franco had sexual contact with an underage girl.
Initially, it was reported that this girl was 14 years old, but her actual age was later proven to be 17. If complaints are made against him, she is still a minor and can be prosecuted under statutory rape charges. He was removed from the Tampa Bay Rays’ roster for the team’s upcoming weekend series against the San Francisco Giants.
August 14, 2023: Wander Franco social media: With Major League Baseball investigating social media remarks regarding Tampa Bay shortstop Wander Franco, the 22-year-old All-Star did not go on the team plane to San Francisco ahead of the Rays’ series against the Giants.
“During today’s game, we were made aware of the social media posts that are circulating regarding Wander Franco,” the Rays stated in a statement released on Sunday. “We take the situation seriously and are in close contact with Major League Baseball while it conducts its due diligence.”
What is a Restricted List?
The restricted list is when a player is removed from the roster and not paid, has been utilized by clubs for a number of reasons, including substance abuse treatment, arrests, failure to report, visa issues, and at the request of players to work through various challenges. In the example of former Los Angeles Dodgers starter Trevor Bauer, who was placed on administrative leave while the league investigated domestic abuse charges against him, the player was removed from the roster but compensated. To place a player on administrative leave, MLB and the MLB Players Association must reach an agreement.
Franco, who did not play in the Rays’ game against Cleveland on Sunday, was in the Rays’ dugout at the start of the game before leaving around the fifth inning. Following Tampa Bay’s 9-2 loss, he did not talk to the media.
