The Vina Cirebon Murder Case

The Vina Cirebon murder case remains one of Indonesia’s most disturbing and widely discussed true crime stories.

On the night of August 27, 2016, 16-year-old Vina Dewi Arsita and her boyfriend Muhammad Rizky Rudiana, known as Eky, were found after a violent incident in Cirebon, West Java.

At first, their deaths were reportedly considered the result of a traffic accident. However, investigators later treated the incident as a criminal case, and the deaths became linked to a brutal attack involving a group of young men.

What made the case even more unusual was what allegedly happened after Vina’s death.

A woman named Linda, who knew Vina, was said to have experienced a mysterious possession-like episode and spoken as though Vina’s spirit was communicating through her.

What Happened to Vina and Eky?

According to court-related accounts reported in Indonesian media, Vina and Eky were travelling on a motorcycle when they encountered a group of young men.

The couple was allegedly chased and attacked.

The prosecution’s version of events stated that both teenagers suffered severe violence and that Vina was also subjected to sexual assault. Their bodies were later found near the Kepongpongan flyover in the Cirebon area.

The case initially created confusion because the scene was reportedly believed to be connected to a road accident.

As investigators examined the deaths more closely, however, attention shifted toward murder. Authorities later arrested several people in connection with the crime.

Seven defendants eventually received life sentences, while another defendant, who was a juvenile at the time, received an eight-year sentence.

Linda and the Alleged Possession of Vina

The strangest chapter in the Vina Cirebon story involves Marlinda Putri, commonly known as Linda.

After Vina’s death, Linda reportedly experienced an episode described by people around her as possession.

During the incident, she allegedly spoke as though Vina was communicating through her and described parts of what had happened on the night of the deaths.

The alleged possession became one of the most famous elements of the case and was later recreated dramatically in the Indonesian film Vina: Sebelum 7 Hari.

When Linda was questioned again by police in May 2024, her lawyer said she was the same woman connected to the widely discussed possession incident. Linda reportedly said she could not remember what she had said while the episode was happening.

It is important to separate the criminal investigation from the supernatural claim. There is no scientific evidence establishing that Vina’s spirit actually possessed Linda. It remains a claim associated with the case rather than a proven explanation.

Was Linda Really Vina’s Best Friend?

The popular version of the story often describes Linda as Vina’s close friend.

However, Linda later clarified that the two were not best friends. She described their relationship as more casual and said they had known each other for a relatively short period.

This is one example of how the real-life case differs from some dramatized versions circulated online.

Why the Vina Case Became Famous Again

Although the murders happened in 2016, the case returned to national attention in 2024 after the release of the film Vina: Sebelum 7 Hari.

The movie introduced the story to a much larger audience and renewed interest in questions surrounding the investigation.

Police arrested Pegi Setiawan in May 2024 after identifying him as a suspect. However, in July 2024, the Bandung District Court granted his pretrial challenge and ruled that his designation as a suspect was invalid. He was subsequently released.

That development added another controversial chapter to an already complicated case.

Why the Vina Cirebon True Crime Story Still Disturbs People

There are many reasons people continue searching for the Vina Cirebon case explained, Vina murder case Indonesia, and the story of Vina and Linda’s alleged possession.

The victims were only teenagers. The case reportedly began as what appeared to be a traffic accident before becoming a murder investigation. Multiple people were convicted, while questions surrounding other alleged participants continued for years.

Then there is the supernatural element.

For believers, Linda’s experience is one of the most chilling alleged paranormal stories connected to a real crime. For skeptics, it is an extraordinary claim that should be treated separately from evidence established through police work and the courts.

Either way, it helped make the Vina Cirebon case unforgettable.

Behind the viral videos, films and ghost stories, however, were two real young people — Vina and Eky — whose violent deaths devastated their families and became the centre of one of Indonesia’s most famous modern true crime cases.
