In the quiet, peaceful neighborhood of Lothian, Maryland, life seemed to roll on uneventfully. The rolling fields of Lothian painted a sleepy green backdrop to the lives of its residents. Among them was a seemingly ordinary family, the Anastasis. However, their house, located on West Bayfront Road, would soon become the epicenter of a shocking and tragic drama involving sex, murder, and a web of dark secrets.

It all began with a 911 call – a routine matter on most days. The voice on the other end was strangely matter-of-fact, devoid of the panic or urgency one would expect in such circumstances. The caller was Anne Anastasi, a 42-year-old housewife and mother of five. Her husband, Anthony Anastasi, lay lifeless in their bedroom, a gunshot wound to his temple. The initial impression was that it was a case of suicide. Anthony had been struggling with depression, largely due to multiple back surgeries that left him unable to work. However, something didn't quite add up, and the investigators soon realized they were dealing with a far more sinister situation than a straightforward suicide.

When the police arrived at the scene, they found the Anastasi home in a state of disarray, filled to the brim with clutter and dark secrets. Papers, books, movies, clean and dirty clothes, and more were strewn across the floor and bed. But it was the discovery of the spent shell casing near Anthony's body that set off alarm bells.Ballistics tests revealed that the bullet recovered from Anthony's body was not fired from the .45 caliber handgun found next to him. This revelation shattered the initial assumption of a murder-suicide.

As the investigators continued to peel back the layers of this perplexing case, they found that the Anastasis were not your typical family. Anne revealed that her husband and Jacqueline Riggs, their 25-year-old houseguest, were not just friends but were engaged in an intimate relationship. Theirs was a complex three-way relationship, characterized by a combination of love, lust, and control. It was, however, an unequal relationship, with Anne being the odd one out. She had encountered intimate contact between her husband and Jacqueline but refused to participate further. The situation had become increasingly strained, with confrontations and arguments becoming the norm.

On that fateful day, Anthony and Jacqueline had been involved in a heated altercation in the basement. When Anthony returned to the bedroom, he was curt with Anne, instructing her to leave the room and sleep with their children in an adjacent bedroom. Anne's account seemed to support the murder-suicide theory, as she claimed to have stumbled upon Anthony's lifeless body after returning home from various errands with her children.

However, further investigation took a dark turn when the police descended to the basement, where the music of heavy metal blasted eerily. There, they discovered a scene straight out of a horror movie. On the blood-soaked carpet lay the lifeless and brutally butchered body of Jacqueline Riggs. She had suffered a horrific fate, with 42 savage knife wounds inflicted all over her body. The room was a gruesome testament to the fierce struggle that had unfolded.Among the eerie details were the locked outside door, screwed-shut windows, and a room filled with overturned trash. It seemed that Jacqueline had been brutally attacked in the basement, leading investigators to believe it was indeed a murder-suicide. However, as they delved deeper into the case, the facts became increasingly baffling, revealing a story of manipulation, jealousy, and cold-blooded murder.

The turning point in the investigation came when the forensic examination of Anthony's body revealed the presence of a projectile – a bullet – that didn't match the .45 caliber handgun found beside him. This discovery shattered the murder-suicide theory.Further complicating the narrative was Anne's daughter's revelation that she had overheard conversations between her father and Jacqueline, in which they discussed the possibility of having another child. The idea of another child ignited jealousy and anger in Anne, who was determined to prevent it from happening.

The cell phone records of Anne and her daughter revealed a sinister plot. Text messages and calls showed they were planning the murders. They conspired to get rid of an abusive husband and the young woman they believed was tearing their family apart. The revelation was shocking: the 13-year-old daughter was heavily involved in orchestrating the plan, while Anne and her daughter's 18-year-old boyfriend, Gabriel Strass, carried out the brutal murders.

Gabriel Strass had been manipulated into believing that Anthony and Jacqueline were evil abusers, and he was offered a place to live with the family once they were out of the picture. He confessed to carrying out the murders, revealing that he had stabbed Jacqueline Riggs to death in the basement, ensuring she did not survive. The murder plot had been meticulously planned, as text messages indicated: "I'm gonna slip the girl and bust the dad."

However, the girl's cell phone records exposed the full extent of the manipulation, revealing their active involvement in the murders. In a chilling phone call between Anne and someone on the outside, Anne's true feelings came to light. She expressed that the world was a better place after the murders, confirming her guilt. In the face of the mounting evidence, Anne Anastasi chose to take a plea deal, resulting in two life sentences. Her daughter was placed in a juvenile facility, with the possibility of release at the age of 21. Gabriel Strass received two life sentences, with all but 60 years suspended. The tragic tale of the Anastasi family revealed a dark world of manipulation, jealousy, and a complex web of relationships that culminated in a horrifying double murder.

The ramifications of the tragedy extended beyond the two lives lost that night. It left four children without both parents and a sibling, all due to a deadly mix of lust, sex, love, and hatred. The Anastasi case serves as a chilling reminder of the human capacity for manipulation and the devastating consequences it can have on those involved.

How sad, it would never have happened if he had either been faithful to his wife, or moved out of the family house.
