In the year 2016, a tragic tale unfolded that centered around a young woman named Michelle Lang. At the age of 25, Michelle embarked on a journey to fulfill her lifelong dream of studying in Australia. Born as May Ling but known by her middle name Michelle, she hailed from Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China. Her character was marked by kindness, sensibility, and respect, attributes cultivated during her upbringing. The bond she shared with her parents was profound, making her father's demise in the 2008 earthquake a heart-wrenching experience.

Michelle's scholastic achievements were commendable, and her aspirations led her to the shores of Australia. Her mother, Mae Jung Lung, wholeheartedly supported this pursuit, convinced that an Australian education would usher in a promising future. In 2011, Michelle became a student at the University of Technology in Sydney, thus realizing her cherished dream. Her aunt, her mother's sister, resided in Australia and extended her a warm welcome by offering her a place to stay.

As the years unfolded, Michelle settled into her new life, excelling academically, forming friendships, and even securing a part-time job. However, in 2016, the story took a grim turn. While Michelle's aunt was away on business in Wollongong, Michelle, her cousin, and Derek Barrett continued residing together in a suburban apartment. The initial years were harmonious, but a series of events soon disrupted the tranquility.

Michelle's last sighting was at the Campsie railway station on April 22, 2016. Her cell phone communications, which had been steady, abruptly ceased. Friends and family who interacted with her leading up to her disappearance detected no signs of distress or unease. Alarm bells rang louder when Michelle's body was discovered on April 24th, floating in the water near Snapper Point. The post-mortem examination revealed a brutal assault, marked by over 30 stab wounds and defensive injuries on her arms. The investigation soon honed in on Derek Barrett, who had been the last person to see Michelle alive.

Barrett's intricate web of lies began to unravel as evidence mounted against him. Phone records and surveillance footage contradicted his claims, and recovered data from his phone painted a chilling picture of his perverse actions. Gruesome videos and images depicted Michelle bound and terrorized. These recordings revealed a sinister and disturbing obsession that culminated in Michelle's tragic demise.

The trial commenced in 2017, wherein Barrett pleaded guilty to a litany of charges, including Michelle's murder. Despite Barrett's attempts to attribute his actions to a troubled past, a psychiatrist's assessment concluded that he was fully responsible for his deeds. Ultimately, Barrett was sentenced to 46 years in prison, though Michelle's family had hoped for a life sentence.

However, the story took yet another disturbing turn when, years later, a USB drive was discovered containing more evidence of Barrett's heinous acts. The contents of these videos left Michelle's family even more traumatized and underscored the extent of Barrett's malevolence. As a result of these new findings, Barrett faced additional charges and was sentenced to an extra 20 years in prison. Regrettably, these sentences would run concurrently, and Barrett could be eligible for parole no sooner than October 27, 2052.

In the aftermath of this devastating tragedy, Michelle's family has been left to grapple with the irreversible pain of losing their beloved daughter and the profound suffering inflicted upon her. The story of Michelle Lang is one that shines a light on the darkest aspects of human nature and serves as a stark reminder of the importance of justice, accountability, and the pursuit of lasting change in a world marred by such cruelty.
