Top 10 Most Dangerous Inmates In Australia's Supermax Goulburn Correctional Centre

Nicknamed "The Circle", some of Australia's most dangerous and depraved criminals, killers and crime bosses are locked away inside Australia's Supermax known as the Goulburn Correctional Centre.

Located three kilometres north-east of the central business district in in Goulburn, New South Wales, the prison is virtually impenetrable with inmates even locked in cages to make phone calls.

Today we look at 10 of the most dangerous criminals locked inside including spree killer Malcolm George Baker, triple murderer Michael Kanaan and Australia's once most wanted man Malcolm Naden.

10 - Sef Gonzales

Convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murders of his father Teodoro Gonzales his mother Mary Loiva Gonzales, and his sister Clodine Gonzales, Sef Gonzales attacked his family in 2001.

After committing the murders, he showered, changed his clothes and sprayed asian hate crime on the walls to try and fool police.

He then visited the Sydney central business district, ate food and visited the nearby video game arcade.

Thinking he had gotten away with the murders, he made attempts to acquire his inheritance and pawned his mothers jewelry.

His clothes, however, were covered in traces of the same spray paint used to write the graffiti on the walls.

As his alibi's began to fall apart, police found research on his computer into poisons, toxic plant seeds and linked these to a poisoning-like illness in his family.

He was arrested by detectives from the Strike Force Tawas on 13 June 2002 and was later revealed to be a pathological liar.

Multiple appeals against his sentence have been lodged and failed with the latest being in March 2021.

The case even led to the New South Wales government making it illegal to fail to disclose information that could have a substantial impact on the value of a property.

9 - Michael Kanaan

Currently serving three sentences of life imprisonment plus 50 years and 4 months without the possibility of parole, triple murderer Michael Kanaan committed his crimes between July and December 1998.

Karam formed a criminal gang using his own initials, DK's Boys, in the late 1990's and mainly dabbled in the sale of drugs, but the gang soon took control of Sydney's criminal drug trade.

Found guilty of shooting three different people, he was also accused of the Lakemba Police Station shooting, the Redfern shooting and White City Police shooting.

Several trials collapsed including one where two jurors indicated they may be associated with parties involved.

By August 2007, Kanaan had been convicted of Murder, malicious wounding with intent, discharge firearm with intent and accessory after the fact to malicious wounding.

He was found to have been involved in setting up a payroll system for fellow inmates at Goulburn in 2002.

8 - Malcolm Naden

Considered to be one of Australia's most wanted men before his capture in March 2012, Naden's criminal charges include everything from Murder to breaking and entering.

Police placed an A$50,000 bounty on his capture, having been on the run for 7 years having attacked and killed Kristy Scholes and her boyfriend's cousin.

After a number of reported sightings at both Western Plains Zoo and Lightning Ridge, police tracked Naden to a run-down cabin approximately 30 kilometers west of Gloucester.

He was arrested in a night time operation by the heavily armed Tactical Operations Unit and later pleaded guilty to 18 different offences in court.

Other charges included the attempted murder of the police officer in 2011 and the indecent assault of a 12-year-old girl.

He was jailed for life without the possibility of parole with the presiding judge telling him "Life outside of prison is not an option for you" to which he replied "thank you, your honour".

7 - Lindsey Robert Rose

Born Lindsey Robert Lehman on 2 May 1955 at North Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, Rose grew up in Sydney's Western Suburbs and became a licensed private investigator in 1979.

His spree of crime began in 1984 when he killed Edward Cavanagh and Cavanagh's girlfriend at their home in Sydney's Hoxton Park.

Three years later he broke into the home of wealthy businessman William Graf and fatally attacked his wife, Reynette.

In 1994, Rose shot and killed Fatma Ozonal and then shot and stabbed Kerrie Pang at Pang's massage parlour in Gladsesville.

Having not been a suspect for any of the five murders, Rose's luck changed in 1996, when a corrupt police officer and associate told detectives that Rose had boasted of the killings.

Having evaded police surveillance he drove from Sydney to Adelaide and obtained employment using his birth name, Lindsey Lehman.

He was soon recognised thanks to a TV campaign and was arrested by members of the South Australian Police STAR Force.

He pled guilty to the five murders in 1998 and was sentenced to five consecutive terms of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Rose was later proven to have been involved in other crimes of robbery, kidnapping, robbery whilst armed, malicious wounding, larceny and supplying a prohibited drug.

6 - John Raymond Travers

Raised in Mount Druitt, a suburb of Blacktown, Sydney, Travers early life and growing up were quite problematic.

Caught using marijuana when he was just 13 years of age, by 14 years old he had become a full blown alcoholic.

Having a reputation for extreme violence and often carrying a knife, he was often reprimanded by local police and the courts.

On February 2, 1986, Travers and 4 accomplices stole a Holden Kingswood, the same vehicle they would use to abduct and brutally murder Anita Lorraine Lynch that same day.

After 22 days on the run, ring-leader Travers and four others were arrested with police revealing over 50 prior convictions

These included armed robbery, assault, larceny, car theft, breaking and entering, drug use, escaping lawful custody, receiving stolen goods and rape.

Traverspleaded guilty to murder at trial and his co-conspirators were all found guilty, receiving life sentences, never to be released.

The Anita Cobby murder was featured in a September 2006 episode of Australian television series Crime & Investigation.

5 - Mark Valera

Mark Valera or Mark Van Krevel as he was previously known, was convicted in 2000 of the murders of David O'Hearn and Frank Arkell in New South Wales.

O'Hearn, a 59 year old man who lived alone, was attacked by Valera in his Albion Park home on 12th June 1998, it was not the first time a murder had taken place in the city thanks to killer Keith Schreiber.

The murder was particularly gruesome with police describing it as one of the worst they had ever seen with investigators even looking into a satanic cult.

Two weeks after the first killing, a second murder occurred, this time at the home of former New South Wales State Parliament member Frank Arkell.

Similarities to the O'Hearn murder were present, but this time a pair of boots and pants were left at the scene with a tip-off leading to Valera.

After police found his fingerprints matched those at the O'Hearn crime scene, he confessed to the murders and handed himself in.

He was found guilty of the murders in August 2000 and was sentenced to two consecutive terms of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

The judge described the murders as acutely disturbing and Valera became the third-youngest person in New South Wales to be sentenced to life without parole.

4 - Bilal Khazal

Currently serving a custodial sentence of fourteen years, with a non-parole period of nine years, Khazal was was a former baggage handler for Qantas Airways at Sydney Airport.

He stood accused of producing a book whilst knowing it was connected with assisting a terrorist attack and was also a prominent figure in the Islamic Youth Movement.

Listed in a Central Intelligence Agency report as a member of Al-Qaeda and it was claimed that he had received training from the Taliban in 1998.

Having served his nine-year non-parole period, he was refused parole in 2017 after high-level intelligence suggested his release may put both the public and national security at risk.

Described in the media as Osama bin Laden's Australian right hand man, he is due for release this year if the original sentence is not extended.

3 - Mostafa Baluch

Caught after a 17-day nationwide manhunt for allegedly cutting off an ankle bracelet which had tracked his whereabouts in Sydney, Baluch was found in a car inside a shipping container.

Nicknamed the Aussie Escobar, he now resides inside Australia's most secure jail while awaiting trial on drug trafficking charges.

Residing in the High Risk Management Correctional Centre Area 1, Baluch is allegedly a driving force behind an attempt to import an estimated 900 kilograms of cocaine into Australia.

He is expected to remain at the jail while awaiting trial.

2 - Leslie Camilleri

Convicted of the Bega schoolgirl murders, both 14-year-old Lauren Margaret Barry and 16-year-old Nichole Emma Collins were abducted and murdered by Camilleri and Lindsay Beckett in 1997.

Camilleri, the ring-leader, ordered Beckett to conduct the killings which occurred over a twelve hour period, was already facing existing charges relating to other assaults.

He claimed that he was in a drug induced stupor when the girls were with the pair and remembered almost nothing about the events that evening.

Found guilty by the Supreme Court jury and on April 27, 1999, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murders, never to be released, he reportedly yawned in court as the sentence was read.

The abduction and murder of the girls was described as one of the worst in Australia's criminal history.

He later pled guilty to another murder, that of Melbourne schoolgirl Prudence "Prue" Bird in 1992 and received a further 28 years.

1 - Malcolm George Baker

Responsible for one of the most brutal spree-killings in Australian history, Malcolm Baker was responsible for the Central Coast massacre.

The shootings began on the Central Coast of New South Wales in his ex-girlfriend Kerry Gannon's apartment, moved onto the resort of Bateau Bay at the home of his 27-year-old son David and finally the home of Ross Smith.

He used his Sawed-off Remington 12-gauge double-barrelled shotgun to end the lives of six people, most of whom were known to him including family members or friends whom he disliked.

Baker then walked, with no emotion, into Toukley police station, surrendered, and handed over the weapon ending an hour long killing spree.

Charged with six counts of murder and one count of attempted murder, he was sentenced to six life imprisonment terms without parole and was one of the first six inmates of Goulburn's High Risk Management unit.
