A cold and heartless killer

Convicted killer Estibaliz Carranza

Motherhood is something that many women look forward to. But how far would you go to become a mother? And what would you do if you wanted to become a mother and your significant other didn’t share your desire? Estibaliz Carranza wanted to have a child more than anything else in her life. And she certainly wouldn’t let a man stand in her way.

From the outside, Estibaliz Carranza seemed “normal.” She had lived in Mexico, Spain, Germany and was well traveled. She was an attractive woman who just wanted to become a mother. However, she didn’t necessarily want to keep any of the potential fathers around. As the owner of an ice cream shop in Austria, she spent the majority of her days selling ice cream cones.

Estibaliz fell in love with a man named Holger Holz. After they were married, she became disillusioned with her marriage and divorced him. The couple still lived together after they separated. In 2008, as Holz sat in front of his computer, Estibaliz shot him in the head and killed him. Estibaliz now had a problem. How would she dispose of him? Using a chainsaw, she dismembered his body.

Estibaliz hid Holz’s remains in a small freezer, containers and hid them in the basement of the ice cream shop. She used air fresheners to mask the odor but was unsuccessful. Afterwards, she began dating an ice cream machine salesman named Manfred Hinterberger. Estibaliz hoped for a child to come from her relationship with him. Evidently, he gave her nothing but grief as a result of their relationship. After accusing him of cheating on her, she just killed him.

As she had already killed her husband, she also shot Hinterberger to death. But now she had to deal with another problem. What does she do with his remains?

After dusting off the chainsaw, she decided to put it back to work. As part of her plan, she dismembered Hinterberger, stored his body parts in the basement of the ice cream shop alongside her husband.

Estibaliz managed to get away with it until 2011 when construction workers entered the basement of the ice cream shop to do some work. When the workers discovered Estibaliz's secret, they contacted the authorities. The authorities discovered the remains of Holger Holz and Manfred Hinterberger. Estibaliz took a cab from her Vienna, Austria home to Udine, Italy, before the police could make an arrest.

Authorities captured her and returned her to Austria for trial. In spite of the killings, she showed little remorse. She confessed to killing both men and then dismembering their bodies. In a court-ordered psychiatric examination, it was determined Estibaliz had significant mental issues and would most likely kill again.

Oddly enough, Estibaliz was now pregnant with her current boyfriend's baby.

Her son was born in 2012 while incarcerated in a mental institution. However, she was not permitted to keep the child. The baby's father received custody. At present, she is serving a life sentence in an all-male prison in Asten, Upper Austria. She is said to be too violent to be held in a women's prison.

Estibaliz authored a prison memoir called My Two Lives: The True Story of the Ice Lady. Apparently, she didn't care about her career or success. All she wanted was children. According to her, she killed her ex-husband because he didn't want to have sex with her. And if he didn't have sex with her, she couldn't get pregnant. For all the trouble she went through to have a child, it was pure Karma that gave her a child and then took him away.
