Jakie Waynes lived with her friend, Avril Miles, on Hepburn road in the St Paul’s area of Bristol. As well as having two names, she also had two homes. Her second home was a council maisonette at Bevan Court, near Grosvenor Road. Jackie worked as a prostitute and would often take her clients to the maisonette. Jackie had three children, but they had all been taken into care.

The evening before Jackie disappeared, she visited her friend and flatmate Avril in hospital and then went to work. It was a busy evening, and many people saw Jackie on the streets of Bristol between 8 and 10 pm. At 10.45 pm, Jackie walked up Brigstock road with another female. Jackie approached a red Ford Cortina that was parked on the corner of Hepburn road. She approached the car and got inside. She did not seem to chat to the driver before getting in, so her friend thought she already knew the man that was driving. He was white and had curly blond hair that could have been highlighted. The car drove off, turning right at the top of Brigstock road onto Ashley Road.

Jackie was back on Ashley Road by 11.10 pm, where she was seen getting into a small Ford Escort-type van. Jackie was seen again at approximately 11.20 pm walking up Ashely Road; this was the last time that she was seen alive.

At midnight, some young men drove home after a night out on the town. They pulled into a track off Perrinpit Lane, where they were listening to music and smoking. At approximately 12.10 am, a Mr and Mrs Shilshon drove down Perrinpit Lane. When they passed the end of the track where the boys were parked, they saw a large white van that was damaged on the side that was visible from the road. They also saw a man of slim build, wearing blue jeans and a multi-coloured bomber jacket, who looked like he was dumping rubbish by the side of the van.

At 12.20 am, Craig Howell and his girlfriend Julie passed the same lane; they also saw the Ford Cortina and something that looked like a body. They turned the car around and drove back, but the Cortina was gone. Craig got out of the vehicle and found Jackie’s body; she had been stabbed several times. Craig and Julie went to a nearby farm where the owner answered the door and went with them to the crime scene.

Only an hour had passed between the last sighting of Jackie alive and her body being found. Police did not know where she was murdered, she could have been murdered elsewhere, and then her body dumped down the country lane. Police surmised that the motive was not robbery as she had money on her when she was found. They thought that she could have had an argument with a client or that someone went out intending to kill a prostitute. Jackie was not argumentative, so the police thought the latter was perhaps the more plausible motive.

Police appealed for the man in the Red Cortina, the man in the Escort type van, the man in the dark Ford Cortina and the man in the white van to come forwards. They stated they did not care what they were doing; they just wanted to find out who killed Jackie. The boys that were smoking in their car told the police that they did not notice the white van, but they did see a dark Ford Cortina.

Police especially appealed to the man in the white van as they thought it was the most important sighting of them all as he appeared to be dumping something. The couple who saw the van said that the man was dumping a sizeable white bundle, so police believe that this was the body of Jackie. They also appealed to anyone who may have done repair work on a similar van, hoping that a garage may come forward.

When Jackie was found, she was part dressed, and one of her shoes was also missing. Was it an accident that her shoe was missing, or did the killer take a trophy from his victim?

Convicted murdered Christopher Halliwell has been named a suspect in Jackie’s murder. However, Avon and Somerset Police said there is no current evidence linking Jackie to Christopher Halliwell.

As of June 2022, Jackie’s case remains unsolved. I could not find any information as to if DNA was taken at the scene.
