In March 2023, 33-year-old Kouri Richins published a children’s book called “Are You with Me?” Where she narrates the chronicle of a child who wonders if his deceased father is still present in his life.

A year earlier, Kouri’s husband died suddenly, so she thought that this would be a good way to help her children and other children deal with the pain.

On the cover there is an illustration of the deceased with wings and inside you can read the following phrase: “Dedicated to my incredible husband and wonderful father.”

But what no one could imagine was that behind this whole facade there was something quite sinister that had also been coming up for a long time.

To understand this case we have to move to the year 2022. At this time the couple formed by Kouri and Eric Richins lived with their 3 young children in Kamas, a town in Utah.

The woman was a real estate agent and the man had a renovation business for which he billed several thousand dollars.

Apparently everything was going well in their lives until something happened on the night of March 4.

At 3:22 a.m. Kouri called the emergency service because according to her she had found her husband lying on the floor of the double room and he looked cold to the touch.

When the police officers and paramedics arrived at the scene, they could only certify the man’s death.

The woman said that that night she prepared her husband a vodka drink to celebrate that she had sold a house.

After she went to sleep with one of the children because she wanted to calm his nocturnal terrors. When she returned to the room at 3 a.m found 39-year-old Eric lying on the floor.

Finally, the autopsy revealed the truth and Kouri Richins was arrested on May 8, 2023. In the registry of her house they confiscated several computers and also her mobile phone, something that would be of vital importance for the case. The woman was about to face charges of aggravated homicide and possession of a controlled substance with the intention of distributing it.

The investigation:

The autopsy revealed that Eric died after ingesting 5 times the lethal dose of fentanyl, a substance that by the way in those amounts can only be obtained illegally. In addition, the night she called the emergency room, Kouri said that she had tried to resuscitate her husband but according to the coroner it was a lie.

With all this, the authorities were clear, the woman put that substance in Eric’s drink before going to sleep with one of her children.

The analysis of her mobile phone also provided them with important data. Kouri said that on the night of the events while she was sleeping with her son she left the device charging in her room, however the investigators found that at that time she sent and received several text messages that were deleted.

The police were able to recover the messages that were directed to a substance trafficker identified as CL. The interrogation of this man brought more light to the case.

CL confessed that in December 2021 he went to Kouri and was in contact with him to ask for prescriptions and medications. The excuse she gave was that an acquaintance of her suffered from severe back pains and wanted to help her.

At first CL got him an analgesic called hydrocodone but two weeks later Kouri asked him for something stronger.. her exact phrase was “some things like Michael Jackson’s.”

With this it was intuited that the woman wanted propofol, which was what ended the singer’s life, but CL could only get her fentanyl pills. For them on February 11, 2022, Kouri paid him a total of $900.

On February 14, Valentine’s Day, Eric had a sandwich that his wife had bought for him during dinner. A few minutes later he had a hives that left him out of breath... Before fainting for hours he managed to put on the epipen of his son’s allergy and benadryl.

As soon as he woke up, Eric called his partner to tell her what had happened and added something else... According to him, his wife was trying to kill him.

Two weeks after this incident, Kouri contacted CL again and paid him another $900 for the same Fentanyl pills. Six days later, Eric Richins died from this substance.

The investigators interviewed several of Eric’s relatives who added more important data... According to their version, the man wanted to divorce Kouri and if he had not yet done so, it was because of his children.

To this it must be added that weeks before the events he changed his will and his life insurance policy.

One of Eric’s sisters said that he had been suspicious of his wife’s intentions for a long time and that she even tried to kill him during a trip to Greece in which he got sick after drinking a drink.

Eric was clear about it and told his family the following... If something happens to me, it’s my wife’s fault.

Thanks to the police documents, it is known that the couple was in conflict over a $2 million house that Kouri Richins bought. Apparently with the aim of reselling it quickly despite her husband’s objections based on the price.

Then she searched the following on Google:

Luxury prisons for the rich of the United States.

Information about the Utah prison.

If the police can see the deleted messages.

How long does it take for life insurance companies to pay?

What is considered an unnatural way of dying?

On the other hand, the man’s estate was in a trust administered by his sister. A day after her death Kouri quarreled with her for this reason and subsequently filed a lawsuit for more than 3 million dollars to dismiss her. His argument was that he had a prenuptial agreement with Eric that gave him the right to all his assets if he died before he divorced.

It is not yet clear how the property dispute will be affected, but what is known is that Utah law prohibits those convicted of homicide from benefiting from their crime.

If Kouri Rinchins is finally found guilty of her husband’s murder, she could spend a minimum of 25 years in prison.

The Utah Department of Child Protection Services did not answer questions about where the children are while their mother is detained without bail.

Before being arrested, Kouri posted a video on Facebook in which she told how much she missed her husband. At the bottom of you could read the following words:

“Life is so... hard without you here!” The cards they have dealt to me seem like a game that simply can’t be played.”

Family and friends remember Eric Richins as a family man, who always strove to be the best father and husband. For them, the man did absolutely everything in his power to give his family every possible opportunity to learn, grow and have fun.

Another strange Mormon crime. Do they drink Vodka? I doubt it, but it hides smells of other drugs. Crazy story - and writes a book for kids. I wonder if that was to assuage guilt to raise money?
