SERVED BY JUSTICE

Questions on My Mind

I was taken aback by the extensive expressions of jubilation. While justice was indeed served, I couldn't help but feel perplexed and conflicted. Is it customary to celebrate in such circumstances? Does the value of human life not elicit any empathy? Am I simply being sentimental or excessively inclined towards a compassionate perspective influenced by the "New Testament"?

Why?

Is it worth celebrating?

In a nearby town, a disturbing incident occurred at a hotel where a young man was tragically murdered. His body was then hastily buried in an undisclosed location, hidden from view. In an effort to cover up the crime, the guest entry book for the day of the victim's stay was deliberately torn apart. As the days went by without any word from the deceased, his family became increasingly worried and decided to alert the police. However, when confronted, the hotel vehemently denied any knowledge of the guest's existence. Despite their denial, the wife of the victim firmly believed that her husband had indeed checked into that particular hotel on that ill-fated day. To support her conviction, she possessed a photograph of the hotel receipt, which her husband had sent to her upon checking in.

After extensive questioning and thorough investigations, it came to light that the hotelier, a well-known figure in the education sector, was the mastermind behind the heinous crime. He, along with his son and a group of hotel staff, were found to be responsible. Speculations arose regarding their motives, hinting at possible connections to ritualistic practices. Additionally, there have been multiple cases of individuals going missing within the university grounds owned by the hotelier. However, despite these unsettling circumstances, concrete evidence establishing a direct link to him remains elusive.

Following multiple court hearings and relentless attempts by the hotelier to manipulate the legal proceedings through his influential connections, the family of the victims remained unwavering in their daily quest for justice. Nevertheless, a pivotal moment arrived when a respected journalist rallied behind their cause, unveiling the hidden truths. Consequently, the legal system emerged victorious, and the hotelier was rightfully condemned to the punishment of hanging. The announcement of this long-awaited verdict triggered an overwhelming wave of joy and relief that resonated across the entire nation.

Yet, I found myself engulfed in a profound sense of bewilderment. There is no denying the unequivocal guilt of the hotelier, and it is crucial that he faces the just repercussions for his deeds. My heartfelt sympathies extend to the deceased’s wife, children, and the entire family who have endured an indescribable tragedy. The fate imposed upon the young man was undeniably brutal, and no person should ever be subjected to such a harrowing ordeal.

But is it humane to impose death penalty by hanging, instead of a life imprisonment sentence. Many argue that the abhorrent nature of the crimes, driven by selfish motives, disqualifies the accused from receiving a humane judgment since they demonstrated a lack of humanity when taking the life of the victim. This perspective suggests that the severity of the crime diminishes the moral grounds for considering the accused's human rights. It is an argument that highlights the profound ethical dilemmas surrounding capital punishment and the varying opinions on its appropriateness in different circumstances.

But again, is it justifiable to take one life in exchange for another in the name of justice, when there’s always the option of imposing a life imprisonment sentence instead? Furthermore, even if such a decision is made, why is there often an overwhelming sense of celebration as if we are pleased that a life will be terminated?

Why?

Should we engage in fervent celebration over this?
