US real estate heir Robert Durst, who was found guilty of the murder of his close friend Susan Berman in September 2021, passed away on January 10, 2022, at the age of 78. Durst lived in the shadow of multiple murder allegations for nearly 40 years. He was awaiting retrial for the murder of his wife, Kathleen Durst.

According to the New York Times, Durst's attorney Chip Lewis confirmed that his client had died of a heart attack at San Joaquin General Hospital in California, where he was undergoing medical examinations.

The 78-year-old had been investigated for the murder of his best friend, Susan Berman, over twenty years ago. Berman was shot in the head at close range in her Beverly Hills home in 2000. Berman, who happened to be the daughter of a gangster from Las Vegas, had told friends that she had provided Durst with a false alibi after his wife, Kathleen Durst, disappeared under mysterious circumstances in 1982. The police had long suspected Durst's involvement in his wife's disappearance. Fearing that Berman might reveal the truth to the authorities, Durst allegedly murdered her. Kathleen Durst's body was never found, but she was declared legally dead in 2017.

After the crime, Durst fled and went into hiding in Galveston, Texas, where he posed as a mute woman. However, even there, his neighbors were not safe from him, as Morris Black soon discovered. In 2001, Durst shot and killed Morris Black, after which he dismembered Black's body with a saw and disposed of the remains in the waters of Galveston Bay. Although Durst was charged with this murder, his lawyers successfully argued that their client had acted in self-defense.

The bizarre story of Durst's life and alleged crimes was documented in the HBO production "The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst" in 2015. The series brought new evidence to light and revitalized the cases associated with the real estate heir, who was arrested on the same day the final episode aired.

Durst granted several interviews to the filmmakers and later stated that his decision to participate in the documentary series had been a "very, very, very big mistake." The two most damning pieces of evidence from the series were a handwritten note and a confession recorded with a hidden microphone.

Following Berman's death, the police received a handwritten note with her address in Beverly Hills, marked with the word "corpse." Durst admitted in the documentary that "only the killer could have written the note." At that moment, the filmmakers presented him with a letter he had sent to Berman a year earlier, and the handwriting was identical. Both notes also misspelled the word 'Beverly' as 'Beverley.'

At the end of the last episode of the HBO series, an audio recording was played in which Durst said, "What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course."
