Rinku Kumari Murder Case: How Three Daughters Fought 5 Years for Justice

For nearly five years, three daughters from Bihar refused to accept what they were repeatedly told about their mother’s death.

Their mother, Rinku Kumari, worked as a warden at the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Avasiya Vidyalaya in Begusarai, Bihar. On April 4, 2021, she was found dead inside the school premises.

The initial investigation moved in the direction of suicide. But her daughters believed from the beginning that something was wrong.

Their persistence eventually took the case from local police and a lower court all the way to the Patna High Court, which ordered a fresh investigation in April 2026. The Special Investigation Team that later reinvestigated the case said Rinku Kumari had been murdered and that her death had allegedly been staged to look like suicide. Two people were subsequently arrested.

What Happened to Rinku Kumari?

According to the Patna High Court judgment, Rinku Kumari went to the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Avasiya Vidyalaya on the morning of April 4, 2021, where she worked as a warden.

At around 2 p.m., her daughter Tezaswini Kumari received a phone call. When family members reached the school, they found Rinku’s body lying on the floor. They were also shown photographs in which she appeared with a noose around her neck connected to a ceiling fan.

For the family, however, the circumstances immediately raised questions.

The daughters maintained that their mother would not have voluntarily abandoned them. Their account also pointed to physical circumstances at the scene and other evidence they believed had not been properly investigated. The original narrative therefore never convinced them.

The ₹15 Lakh Land Dispute

One of the most important angles raised before the High Court involved a financial dispute.

According to the petitioner’s case recorded in the judgment, Rinku Kumari had allegedly paid ₹15 lakh in connection with a land transaction. The petitioner alleged that neither the land was transferred nor the money returned.

A panchayat was subsequently held, and the money was allegedly supposed to be returned on April 4, 2021—the same day Rinku Kumari was found dead.

This financial dispute became an important part of the fresh investigation.

The CCTV Mystery

Another major question involved the school’s CCTV system.

Court records show that the CCTV cameras became non-functional shortly after Rinku entered the school and resumed operating several hours later.

The High Court noted that the earlier investigation had failed to adequately examine why the CCTV system remained switched off for roughly five and a half hours.

For a case involving an unexplained death inside a school, that gap was significant.

The daughters believed such details deserved a much deeper investigation rather than a quick conclusion that their mother had died by suicide.

Years of Fighting the System

The most extraordinary part of the Rinku Kumari case is perhaps not only the investigation itself but the determination of her daughters.

They approached police officials and other authorities seeking a deeper inquiry. A protest petition was also pursued after police submitted their closure report.

The Patna High Court record shows that the police filed the closure report on October 31, 2021. The resulting complaint case was later dismissed by a Judicial Magistrate in Begusarai on April 9, 2025.

But the family did not stop.

Tezaswini Kumari approached the Patna High Court seeking reinvestigation or a fresh investigation into her mother’s death.

That decision changed the direction of the case.

Patna High Court Orders Fresh Investigation

On April 8, 2026, Justice Sandeep Kumar of the Patna High Court ordered a fresh investigation.

The court entrusted the reinvestigation to senior IPS officer Vikas Vaibhav and allowed him to constitute his own team.

The judgment stressed the need for a holistic investigation capable of uncovering the actual truth behind Rinku Kumari’s death.

The Special Investigation Team subsequently re-examined medical, forensic, digital, financial and witness evidence.

And the conclusion was dramatically different from the earlier investigation.

SIT Says It Was Murder, Not Suicide

In July 2026, the Bihar Police SIT said evidence indicated that Rinku Kumari had been strangled before her body was hung, allegedly in an attempt to make the death appear to be suicide.

Police arrested Kaushal Kumar and school caretaker Ajit Kumar alias Bablu in connection with the case. The investigation remained ongoing, and the allegations against the accused are subject to the judicial process.

The SIT also identified serious shortcomings in the original investigation, including forensic indicators that investigators said had not been properly pursued.

For Rinku Kumari’s daughters, the development represented something they had been demanding for years: that their claim be investigated seriously.

Why the Rinku Kumari Case Matters

The Begusarai Rinku Kumari murder case is about more than one criminal investigation.

It is also a story about persistence.

Three young women who had lost their mother kept questioning an official conclusion even after police investigations, closure proceedings and years of legal struggle appeared to work against them.

Their fight demonstrates why unexplained deaths require careful forensic investigation, preservation of digital evidence and serious examination of inconsistencies before conclusions are reached.

From April 2021 to 2026, Rinku Kumari’s daughters continued asking essentially the same question:

A fresh investigation has now produced a very different answer from the one they were originally given.

The criminal case still has to proceed through the legal system, and arrests should not be confused with convictions. But the daughters’ determination succeeded in achieving something significant: a reopened investigation and a renewed examination of evidence that had once been considered a closed matter.

Their five-year fight has turned the Rinku Kumari case in Begusarai into a powerful story about persistence, accountability and the pursuit of justice.
