My Reaction to Karlmelo Anthony's Verdict

It has been months since former High School Senior Karmelo Anthony stabbed Austin Metcalf, a white teenager, to death outside a high school track meet. Since Austin's death, reactions have been mixed, siding with Karmelo or with the deceased Austin Metcalf.

According to prosecutors and witness testimony, both students were attending a district track meet when a dispute arose under a school tent during a rain delay. Witnesses said Metcalf asked Anthony, who attended a different school, to leave the tent. The confrontation escalated, and Anthony stabbed Metcalf once in the chest. Metcalf later died from his injury. Anthony remained at the scene and was arrested shortly afterward.

Anthony, who was 17 at the time, was charged as an adult with first-degree murder under Texas law. His defense team argued that he acted in self-defense after feeling threatened during the confrontation. Prosecutors argued that the use of deadly force was not justified and that the stabbing constituted murder.

The case became a major topic on social media and in national news coverage. Discussions often focused on race, self-defense laws, youth violence, fundraising efforts for both families, and the fairness of the legal process. Supporters of Anthony argued that he feared for his safety, while supporters of the Metcalf family viewed the stabbing as an unjustified killing. The trial took place in June 2026. After hearing testimony from witnesses, law enforcement officers, and experts, the jury rejected Anthony's self-defense argument and found him guilty of murder. As of June 2026, Anthony has been convicted of murder, sentenced to 35 years in prison; however, he has begun the appeals process. Honestly, this whole case is not surprising because everything seems so similar to what every black man or black boy faced during trial, especially with a white jury. However, I am not fond of the fact that he was sentenced to 35 years in prison. It doesn't make any sense why they are giving black people longer sentences than white people. As of recent, a man was sentenced to almost 50 years for Lego Theft with a deadly weapon. Another black Florida woman was given the maximum 55 years for running ducklings (no community service, no anger management classes, or any rehabilitation).

If Karmelo Anthony were a white boy who stabbed a black teenager, the media would paint a different picture of the teenager as an “innocent kid who just defended himself from a bully” or, better yet, “free him, he is just a kid defending himself”. Let's just face it, White people want us dead. They cruelly enjoy it, especially when it comes to white people shooting at us. Hate me or not, I don't care, but when it comes to white people or other races killing black people, they would say it is "self-defense". This is just like the same situation with Trayvon Martin and Brock Turner (A college student who was given the sentence after sexually assaulting a student at a frat party). Despite everything, I do feel sorry for both families going through losing their sons, one is dead, and the other one is now being sentenced to 35 years in prison. But I find it unfair that a teen who defended himself gets the maximum sentence. Conservative white people would feel outraged if it were a white teenager sentenced to 35 years.

In conclusion, it is shameful and harsh that this whole thing has divided the whole nation, and the justice system can be so racist and devious. Hopefully, Anthony would be strong-willed, and his defense team would fight for him.
