Mahesh Kumar Murder Case Explained: A Shocking True Crime Story from Delhi, India

Some true crime stories are so carefully planned that they almost resemble movie scripts. The Mahesh Kumar murder case in Delhi was one such investigation.

A government employee disappeared without explanation. His car was found in one place, his mobile phone appeared to be somewhere else, and the person who claimed to be helping his family search for him eventually became the focus of the police investigation.

At the centre of the case were Mahesh Kumar, a senior surveyor associated with the Survey of India, and his colleague Anish, also reported as Anees in Hindi-language coverage.

Mahesh Kumar Suddenly Disappears

On August 28, 2023, Mahesh Kumar left home after telling his family that he was going to meet his colleague Anish in Delhi's RK Puram area.

Mahesh never returned.

His family contacted Anish, who reportedly told them that Mahesh had indeed visited him but later left after giving him his car and its key.

The explanation immediately created a strange mystery.

Why would Mahesh leave without his own vehicle?

And where had he gone?

Police began tracing his movements after his family reported him missing. Investigators found another confusing clue: Mahesh's mobile phone showed a last location in Faridabad, Haryana, even though there was no evidence that Mahesh himself had actually gone there.

A Mobile Location Designed to Mislead Police

According to the police account reported by several newspapers, Anish allegedly planned Mahesh's killing in advance.

Investigators said he left his own phone in Sonipat, creating digital evidence suggesting that he was somewhere else.

Mahesh was then called to Anish's RK Puram residence, reportedly on the pretext that money owed to him would be returned.

Police alleged that Mahesh was attacked with a heavy iron object or pipe wrench and killed inside the flat.

But the alleged plan did not end with the murder.

Investigators said Anish took Mahesh's phones toward Faridabad and switched them on there, creating a misleading digital trail. Police initially began searching around the area indicated by the phone location.

This explains one of the strangest elements of the case: the phone location and the victim's actual location were completely different.

The WhatsApp Status That Added Another Layer

According to investigators, a WhatsApp status was also uploaded from Mahesh's phone after his death.

The message allegedly suggested that Mahesh had gone underground because of a large debt.

The apparent objective, police believed, was to make his disappearance look voluntary rather than criminal.

But Mahesh's family reportedly did not accept the explanation.

Police continued investigating his financial transactions, contacts and final movements.

How Mahesh Kumar's Body Was Hidden

The disposal of the body made the case even more disturbing.

Police alleged that Anish obtained access to another colleague's vacant government accommodation in RK Puram. Investigators said he made a duplicate key before returning the original.

Mahesh's body was then allegedly transported in a vehicle to the vacant property.

A shallow pit was dug in the courtyard or rear portion of the property, and the body was buried there.

Police further alleged that a worker was paid to construct a cement platform over the area without being told what was underneath it.

The worker later became an important witness in the investigation.

One Car Key Changed the Investigation

Despite all the alleged planning, a remarkably small clue helped investigators connect the pieces.

Mahesh's car key was found with Anish.

Police already knew that Mahesh's phone had appeared in Faridabad while his car had been found elsewhere. Finding the victim's car key with the colleague who had last met him made the story increasingly difficult to explain.

Investigators questioned Anish about the inconsistencies.

According to police, he eventually admitted his involvement and led investigators to the location where Mahesh's body had been buried.

The body was recovered on September 2.

What Was the Alleged Motive?

Reports described two possible sources of conflict.

Police said Anish had borrowed approximately ₹9 lakh from Mahesh, and disputes had developed over repayment.

Investigators also said there was resentment involving a woman who worked with them, although accounts of this part of the motive varied between reports.

Police therefore examined both the financial dispute and personal tensions between the colleagues.

The alleged attempt to manipulate phone-location evidence demonstrates how criminals may try to use technology to create false trails. At the same time, the investigation shows why police rarely depend on a single piece of digital information.

Mobile records, financial transactions, witness statements, vehicle evidence and physical clues eventually had to be considered together.

In this case, the smallest inconsistency — a car key in the wrong person's possession — reportedly helped investigators unravel a much larger story.
