Crime story. Accident or Murder?

This story was told to me by my dear friend. It happened a couple of years ago.

An old couple was living next to the place where my friend's mother lived. They were around of age of sixty. Ordinary people living their regular lives, already come to the age of pension as that was their only income. They weren't people who interact with the outside world, a lonely old couple with a bad habit of drinking.

It was a Friday evening. My friend came home from her dormitory for the weekend. It was a three-hour bus ride to her hometown and an exhausting one as well. With her bags in her hands, she went home. The moment she stepped into the building, she noticed a weird odor. At first, she brushed the smell off as she didn't want to be bothered about anything during her just arriving home. A couple of hours later, she couldn't bear the smell and started asking her mother about it. Her mom didn't know the answer to the question but told her that she noticed as well. As they followed the stench, they stepped into the corridor, where it felt to be the strongest by the neighbor's doors. That started to raise suspicion in them. My friend's mother began to remember that she hadn't seen anyone come out of their home for about a week.

The man had a habit. Daily around the same time, he went outside of the apartment to get his daily liquor. As my friends' mother recalled, the outgoings had stopped at that particular week. That also made her recall, that she always could hear the radio throughout the walls. The last time she heard it, the tune went from loud to quiet, then loud and quiet again till it had stopped completely.

That made them worried because now it felt like maybe something has happened. After all, it just felt off. My friend and her mom tried to open the doors and failed once they discovered that they were locked. With that, they asked mom's brother to come over and help to open the door since he was strong enough to do it. Once they get a hold of him and the doors finally were opened, there was waiting for an unpleasant and horrific scene. What he found wasn't anything anyone could ever imagine. He found the old man dead on the floor. It looked like he had tripped over the little table and just been left there laying on the floor, his face half-melted, already had started decaying. With that scene followed to women; dead in her bedroom, naked, right next to her bed.

With shaky hands and horrified expressions, they dialed 911*. (911 meaning as an emergency number, the number in the country they lived was a different one, I used it in the text because that's the combination most people in the world recognizes.)

From that moment, police were in and out, dealing with the occurring, cleaning it up, asking question's and figuring out the possibilities that had led to this horrific scene.

A couple of days passed and the results had come in from the lab.

The man had been dead for a whole full week from head trauma, women for only two days from overdosing heart pills.

So that led to the conclusion that the man had been dead for almost a week.

The woman had been in her apartment for almost a week with her other half being dead in the living room. No one knew why she didn't call the authorities when the man died.

A thought that maybe she was just terrified and didn't felt like she could deal with what happened. Nevertheless, the fact that she was old and with no family by her side.

Maybe she felt guilty, that she could be the reason the man had died and that prevented her to call for help when the unfortunate accident had occurred. Maybe she went insane. Maybe it was the state of loneliness and the detachment from the outside world played a part that prevented her to ask for help. Maybe overdosing felt like the only option she could bear. Why she was naked is still a question. The real answer's only known by them both. That only leads to speculations of what went into the minds of the now passed pair. A sad and horrifying occurrence it was.
