OPEN PETITION.

Mr Usman Baba Alkali,

The Inspector General of Police,

Force Headquarters,

Louis Edet House,

Abuja,

25th September, 2021.

Dear Sir,

THE GRUESOME MURDER OF AN ITSEKIRI LAW GRADUATE MR TORITSEJU EMMANUEL JACKSON IN WUSE ABUJA: A CALL TO FISH OUT THOSE BEHIND THIS BARBARIC ACT AND PROSECUTE THEM ACCORDINGLY.

1. The Movement for the Protection of Iwere Homeland, Development and History (MPIHDH) have received with utmost shock, and disbelief the sad news of the gruesome murder of Mr Toritseju Emmanuel Jackson, an Itsekiri son which we understand took place in an undisclosed hotel in Wuse, Abuja on the 12th of September, 2021after he purportedly received a phone call from a friend who invited him to the said hotel.

2. Mr Toritseju Emmanuel Jackson, a law student from Buckingham University in the United Kingdom we learnt was in Nigeria to participate in the mandatory National Youths Service Corps programme until he was cut down in his prime when he is needed most by his immediate family, the Itsekiri nation, Nigeria and humanity in general. Like a joke, the hopes and aspirations of this Itsekiri son and innocent citizen whose ONLY crime is to yield to the call to come and serve his fatherland, has been extinguished, and wasted as we watched the footage of his burial ceremony yesterday 23rd September, 2021 in total agony, frustration and tears.

3. We are writing you this open petition to call on you to dig deep into the circumstances that led to the gruesome murder of Mr Toritseju Emmanuel Jackson with a view of bringing the perpetrators of this dastardly and wicked act to book. Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (As Amended), manifestly provided for the right to freedom of life of every person, and accordingly no person shall be deprived his life except under circumstances provided for by the law. In the instant case, Mr Toritseju Emmanuel Jackson's right to life has been greatly violated by those who committed this grave crime hence everything humanly possible MUST be done to unmask and fish out the killers so that they can be properly prosecuted. Mr Toritseju Emmanuel Jackson, a very brilliant young man, and a poet does not deserve to die in the way he did. We demand for the full investigation of the crime and ask for justice on behalf of his immediate family, the Itsekiri nation and the country in general who are all victims of this irreparable loss.

4. It is totally condemnable, unconscionable and highly reprehensible for any Nigerian, parents, and family to loss a child who they have labored so much to train to the university level only to return to his country of birth to serve his nation in fulfilment of his educational requirements to die in cold blood in the hands of certain individuals who have no single value for any human life. It is a very sad irony to say the least that Mr Toritseju Emmanuel Jackson was safer in a foreign land all through his study abroad but became unsafe in his own country of birth to the extent that he have to die in such a manner in the federal capital of his country where he ought to be more safer and protected. We therefore call on you not to leave any stone unturned in unraveling the culprits of this heinous crime.

5. It is our expectations going forward that the Federal government, the state governments, and the National Assembly will give the suggestion for the cancellation of the N.Y.S.C. scheme a second thought or better still allow the students to serve in their respective states of origin so that thousands of vibrant Nigerian youths and graduates whose lives are being cut short across the country under various security circumstances after their parents and family members must have suffered to train them without any form of assistance from government and they are killed unlawfully, can be put to an end. The national unity and integration that is one of the reasons for setting up the NYSC scheme would not be achieved through the deployment of vulnerable Nigerian students to places where they can become soft targets to wicked people, but will only be achieved when the country is properly structured in such a way that gives every Nigerians a sense of belonging and hope.

While we look forward to the positive response to this petition, kindly accept the warmest regards of our esteemed consideration.
